LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee scored eight goals in both the first and second periods in cruising to a 24-7 victory over Randolph in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening at Wilson Field.
W&L (9-6, 7-1) amassed a 5-0 lead by the 10:28 mark of the first quarter on the strength of two goals from senior attackman Whit Griffin (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) and one goal and one assist each from junior attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) and sophomore attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum).
Randolph (5-11, 1-7) scored three of the next four goals to make it a 6-3 game with 6:29 left in the opening quarter. Senior midfielder Ryan Campbell scored two of the goals to pull the WildCats within three scores.
However, the Generals would put the game away from there, scoring each of the game's next 13 goals for a 19-3 advantage with 5:57 left in the third period. The trio of attackmen and senior midfielder Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif. / Redwood) did much of the damage during the stretch, as the four players combined for eight goals and three assists during the run. Witherell totaled three goals and an assist across the 13-goal run, while Perrella had three goals.
Randolph scored back-to-back goals to end the third period and make it a 19-5 game, but the Generals continued to pull away in the final quarter for the 17-goal final margin.
For the game, W&L led in shots (58-23), ground balls (58-26) and faceoffs (24-11).
Witherell finished with four goals and three assists to move his ODAC-leading scoring total to 81 points (46 G, 35 A). That moved him into fifth-place on the school's single-season scoring list, just six points away from Matt Dugan's '01 record total of 87 points set in 2000.
Griffin finished with four goals and one assist, Perrella had three goals and Dardani and sophomore attackman Sam Boxley (Roanoke, Va. / Patrick Henry) had two goals and two assists each. Sophomore midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) notched one goal and two assists, while junior midfielder Charlie Cory (Afton, Va. / Deerfield Academy) posted two goals.
First-year midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) continued his dominance at the faceoff X, winning 18-of-26 draws. He is now 200-for-306 on the season, moving into fifth-place on the school's single-season list for faceoff wins.
Sophomore Philip Rech (Darien, Conn. / Darien), junior Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Culver Academy) and first-year Aidan Long (Concord, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle) all played in goal for W&L, combining to make seven saves.
Randolph, which committed 33 turnovers in the game, was led by Campbell, who tallied four goals in the contest. Three goalkeepers also played for the WildCats and they combined to make 15 stops.
Washington and Lee returns to the field on Saturday when it hosts Randolph-Macon for a 12:00 pm contest. A W&L win would assure the Generals of an ODAC Tournament Quarterfinal bye and the right to host the ODAC Semifinals and Championship on May 5-6. The Generals have not hosted the ODAC Championship since the 2004 campaign.
