LEXINGTON, Va. – The 19th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team posted 26 goals by 16 different players in recording a 26-9 victory over Shenandoah on Saturday afternoon at Shentel Stadium.
The Generals (8-4, 6-0) didn't take long to shake off the rust from a 10-day layoff, tallying seven first-quarter scores en route to a 7-2 lead after the initial 15 minutes of play. Senior midfielder Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif. / Redwood) scored a pair of first quarter goals and junior attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) notched one goal and one assist in the opening period.
After Shenandoah (8-6, 3-4) opened the second quarter with a goal by senior midfielder Connor Bishop that made it a 7-3 game just 38 seconds into the period, the Blue & White responded with five straight goals to push the advantage out to 12-3 with 11:12 left in the first half. Senior midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) started the run with a man-up goal from junior attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum). Witherell added one more assist and a goal himself during the stretch that helped carry W&L to a 13-5 lead at the halftime break.
The Generals continued to pull away after the intermission, scoring each of the first seven goals of the second half to push out to a 20-5 lead at the 2:54 mark of the third period. Dardani notched a pair of tallies during the run and added a third goal with no time remaining in the quarter for a 21-6 lead entering the fourth period.
W&L played mostly reserves for the remainder of the contest, but continued to find the goal, totaling five more scores in the final 15 minutes. First-year attackman Mike Weaver (Lititz, Pa. / Cedar Crest) led the way with two goals and one assist in the fourth period.
The Blue & White threw 62 shots at the goal, while Shenandoah totaled 29 shots. W&L also won the ground ball battle, 44-16, and the Generals won 30-of-38 faceoffs.
Witherell led the offense with eight points for the second straight game and third time this season. He totaled four goals and four assists. Dardani posted four goals and two assists, while Perrella and Weaver tallied two goals and one assist each. Henry and first-year midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) scored two goals apiece, and junior midfielder Kevin Havermann (Reston, Va. / Potomac) posted a career-high three points on one goal and two assists.
First-year midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) was once again dominant at the faceoff X, winning 16-of-19 draws. Classmate Jed Londrey (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) was equally as efficient, winning 11-of-15 faceoffs. He also scored a goal and assisted on another.
A trio of goalkeepers played for W&L, with sophomore Philip Rech (Darien, Conn. / Darien) earning the win after playing the first 34:51 and totaling six saves with five goals-against. Junior Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Culver Academy) and first-year Aidan Long (Concord, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle) also played in the second half, combining for two saves.
Sophomore attackman Ryan Schott led the Hornets with three goals and one assist. Senior attackman Stephen LaTona had two goals and one assist, while senior midfielder Tilghman Sanders had two assists. Senior Ben Judy was among three goalkeepers that played for SU, tallying 13 saves and allowing 16 goals in the opening 35:19.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday evening when it travels to the US Lacrosse National Headquarters in Sparks, Md., where it will take on Elizabethtown. Opening faceoff is slated for 6:00 pm.
