First Quarter Carries W&L Men's Lax Past VWC, 20-5

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Washington and Lee scored eight first-quarter goals and cruised to a 20-5 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Friday evening at Birdsong Field.

Senior attackman Whit Griffin (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) tallied three goals and two assists during the opening quarter, while junior attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) added three goals.

Virginia Wesleyan (1-6, 0-2) ended the rally with a goal by senior attackman Eddie Desiderio off an assist from junior midfielder Joe Couture just 1:02 into the second period.  However, the Generals used another four-goal run, including one score each from Griffin and Dardani, to assume a 12-1 lead at the halftime break.   

The Generals (4-4, 2-0) substituted frequently in the second half and eight different players found the back of the net as W&L tallied a season-high goal total.

W&L held a 56-19 advantage on shots and won 47 ground balls, as opposed to 31 for the Marlins.  The Blue & White also claimed 18-of-29 faceoffs in the contest.

Griffin finished with five goals and two assists, while Dardani notched four goals and one assist.  Sophomore A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) totaled two goals and three helpers, and first-year midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien) registered four assists. First-year midfielder Garrett Cannon (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) and sophomore attackman Robert Cooleen (Princeton, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) chipped in two goals apiece.  First-year midfielder Jack Hodgson (Richmond, Va. / St. Christopher's) won 13-of-17 faceoffs and a trio of goalies, sophomore Philip Rech (Darien, Conn. / Darien), junior Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Culver Academy) and first-year Aidan Long (Concord, Mass. / Concord-Carlisle), combined to make nine saves.

Desiderio finished with two goals for the Marlins.  Couture had two assists and three keepers combined to make 22 saves for VWC.

Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Lynchburg for a 5:00 pm contest.
