LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore attackman Hunter Davis scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Thomas Pfeiffer with just 1:11 remaining to lift seventh-ranked York to a 12-11 victory over 20th-ranked Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse action on Saturday at Wilson Field.
The game was a rematch of an NCAA second round contest last season won by York, 12-5.
The Generals (0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 5:05 of the game on unassisted tallies by senior midfielders Ryan Brady (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Jesuit) and Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif. / Redwood).
After the Spartans (1-0) sandwiched a pair of goals around a single score by senior midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day), the Blue & White used a two-goal run to take a 5-2 lead with 1:46 left in the first period. Sophomore attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) scored off an assist from first-year midfielder Evans Alison (Huntsville, Ala. / Randolph) and Perrella scored man-up from senior attackman Whit Griffin (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate).
York responded to the three-goal deficit with a four-goal spurt that gave the Spartans their first lead of the game. Sophomore attackman Brendan McGrath notched one goal and one assist during the stretch that gave York a 6-5 lead with 7:48 left in the half. W&L worked its way back into 7-7 tie before the halftime break.
The Spartans began the third period with a goal by Pfeiffer off a feed from McGrath to take an 8-7 lead 1:55 into the second half, but W&L retaliated with a three-goal run to produce a 10-8 lead with 5:39 left in the penultimate quarter. Perrella started the rally with a man-up goal from Henry at 9:10 and first-year midfielder Garrett Cannon (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) scored 1:47 later off an assist from first-year midfielder Hudson Hamill (Darien, Conn. / Darien). Junior attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) then scored unassisted to cap the run.
York scored once before the end of the third and found the net again with 13:37 remaining to knot the game at 10-10, but Witherell gave W&L an 11-10 lead when he found rope off a feed from sophomore midfielder Drew Barnard (Darien, Conn. / Brunswick School) at 11:06.
The Spartans tied the contest at 10:19 and eventually won the game on Davis' goal in the final minute. W&L won the ensuing faceoff and had a pair of shots in the final 30 seconds, including a shot by Perrella that was saved by York junior goalkeeper Landry Marshall with 25 seconds remaining.
York held a 42-29 advantage in shots, a 37-23 edge in ground balls and the Spartans won 17-of-27 faceoffs.
Washington and Lee was led by Perrella, who scored three goals and assisted on another. Witherell and Dardani each had two goals, while Griffin had one goal and two assists. Junior Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Culver Academy) played all 60 minutes in goal and produced 12 saves.
Pfeiffer finished with three goals and two assists to lead York. Davis totaled four goals, while McGrath had two goals and two assists. Marshall finished with six saves while playing the duration in goal.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Christopher Newport for a 7:00 pm contest.
