W&L Men's Lacrosse Downs H-SC, 14-6, to Advance to ODAC Finals

SALEM, Va. – The second-seeded Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team scored nine unanswered goals across the first three periods en route to posting a 14-6 victory over third-seeded Hampden-Sydney on Saturday at Kerr Stadium. 

The Tigers (13-6) got on the board first as senior midfielder Jake Koferl scored unassisted 2:52 into the game for a 1-0 lead.  However, that would be the last goal for H-SC until 7:32 remained in the third period. 

The Generals grabbed control with four goals in the final 9:24 of the first period for a 4-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes.  First-year attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) scored unassisted at 9:24 and senior midfielder Graeme Weaver (Newtown Square, Pa. / Malvern Prep) scored twice in a span of 1:27 to make it 3-1.  Sophomore attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) added a goal from a feed by junior midfielder Ryan Brady (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Jesuit) at 1:01 for the 4-1 advantage.

Senior attackman Kevin Katzmann (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) and Dardani each scored in the second quarter, as the Generals carried a 6-1 lead into the intermission.

The W&L run continued early in the second half, with senior long-stick midfielder Bobby DeStefano (Edgewater, Md. / Severn) finding the net off the opening faceoff set up by an assist from senior midfielder Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Delbarton).  Witherell scored at 11:28 and DeStefano notched a second goal 28 seconds later for a commanding 9-1 lead.

The Tigers stemmed the tide with a pair of goals from sophomore attackman Connor Pool just 34 seconds apart, but Weaver stopped any momentum with an unassisted goal at 4:59 for a 10-3 lead.

W&L scored a pair of man-up goals and added one man-down tally, scoring four total goals in the final period to continue to pull away for the win.

Hampden-Sydney held a 28-26 advantage on shots and W&L notched a 32-30 edge in ground balls.  The Tigers also won 15-of-24 faceoffs.

Weaver led the way for the Generals with three goals, while Witherell, Dardani, Katzmann and DeStefano logged two goals apiece.  Senior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded nine saves.

Koferl scored three goals and Pool chipped in two tallies to lead the Tigers.  Mitch Renfrow played the duration in goal and totaled six saves.

Washington and Lee advances to Sunday's ODAC Championship game which will be played at 2:00 pm in Salem.  W&L will face either top-seeded Roanoke or fourth-seeded Lynchburg.
