W&L Men's Lacrosse Notches a 16-6 Win Over Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – Washington and Lee used a six-goal third period to pull away for a 16-6 victory over Randolph-Macon in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Day Field.

R-MC (4-13, 3-6) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by senior attackman Ryan Davidson and sophomore midfielder Coleman Adams in the opening 5:21 of the contest.  However, the Generals (13-3, 8-1) responded by scoring the game's next six goals to assume a 6-2 lead with 8:15 left in the second quarter.  Sophomore attackman Sam Dardani (Waccabuc, N.Y. / Westminster) got the rally started when he scored unassisted at the 6:38 mark of the first quarter.  He would score once more during the run that featured goals by five different players.

The Yellow Jackets stopped the bleeding with a goal by sophomore attackman Kyle Keepers at the 6:45 mark and the Generals carried a 6-3 lead into the half.

The Blue & White took control of the contest quickly following the break, with senior attackman Austin Tamayo (Oviedo, Fla. / Lake Highland Prep) scoring off a feed from Dardani 2:19 into the third period.  He then fed first-year attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) for a man-up goal 35 seconds later and senior defenseman Buck Armstrong (Austin, Texas / Episcopal) scored his second goal in as many weeks, going coast-to-coast for a goal at 10:46.  Dardani scored two more and senior attackman Kevin Katzmann (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) also found the net with 4:42 to conclude the third-quarter scoring.

Senior midfielder Andrew Riehl (Reisterstown, Md. / St. Paul's), senior defenseman Bobby DeStefano (Edgewater, Md. / Severn) and senior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) all scored in the fourth quarter en route to W&L posting its 20th straight win over the Yellow Jackets.

The Generals out-shot R-MC by a count of 40-29 and the Yellow Jackets held a 44-43 edge in ground balls.  The Yellow Jackets also won 16-of-26 faceoffs.

Dardani tied a career-high with four goals and added one assist for five points.  Katzmann scored two goals and Tamayo had one goal and two assists.  Witherell and senior midfielder Max Hutson (Houston, Texas / Episcopal) totaled one goal and one assist apiece.  Senior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) played the first 51:13 in goal and recorded 12 saves with four goals against.  Sophomore Nic Peterson (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Culver Academy) played the final 8:47 and notched three saves with two goals allowed.

Davidson paced the Yellow Jackets with three goals, while junior midfielder Sam Mayer tallied one goal and one assist.  Junior Brian Davies played the initial 49:44 between the pipes and made 12 saves with 13 goals allowed.  Senior Tommy Smith played the final 10:16 and made one save while allowing three goals.

Washington and Lee will be the No. 2 seed for the ODAC Tournament and will receive a bye in the quarterfinals.  The Generals will return to action in the semifinals on Saturday when they face the winner of a game between third-seeded Hampden-Sydney and sixth-seeded Guilford.
