Hutson's Game-Winner Leads W&L Men's Lax Past ETown, 10-9

RADNOR, Pa. – Senior midfielder Max Hutson (Houston, Texas / Episcopal) picked up a loose ball and fired a shot over Elizabethtown junior goalkeeper Davis Miracle's shoulder with 24 seconds left to lift the Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday evening at Cabrini College.

The victory extended the W&L (11-2) win streak to nine games, its longest since claiming 12 straight during the 2004 campaign.  It also snapped a six-game win streak for Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays (10-4) recovered from a 7-5 deficit late in the third period, scoring four straight tallies to assume a 9-7 advantage with 5:28 left in the fourth quarter.  However, the Generals scored the final three goals to walk away with the win.

Senior midfielder Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Delbarton) got the rally started with 5:17 left when he won the faceoff that followed Elizabethtown's ninth goal and fired a shot past Miracle to make it 9-8.  Junior midfielder Joe Perrella (Larkspur, Calif. / Redwood) knotted the game at 9-9 with 3:51 left when he scored off an assist from first-year attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum).

Each team had possession in the final three minutes, with the Blue Jays controlling the ball in their offensive end coming out of a timeout with 1:24 remaining.  Elizabethtown turned it over with just over one minute remaining and W&L senior defenseman Bobby DeStefano (Edgewater, Md. / Severn) picked up the ground ball with exactly one minute left.  The Generals cleared it and took a timeout shortly after getting into the offensive box.  Following the break in action, senior midfielder Graeme Weaver (Newtown Square, Pa. / Malvern Prep) tried to split a double team while attacking from behind the goal with just under 30 seconds remaining.  He lost possession, but Hutson was there to pick up the ball and fire home the game-winner.

W&L went scoreless for the first 21:02 of the game and the Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-1 lead with 6:09 left in the first half.  Perrella scored man-up from junior attackman Whit Griffin (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) with 2:52 left and Weaver knotted the game at 3-3 with 1:04 left on an unassisted goal.  The Generals scored four times in the third period as Weaver notched a pair of assists to give W&L the 7-5 lead with 1:50 left in the penultimate quarter.

The Generals held a 39-22 advantage in shots and a 35-33 edge in ground balls.  Elizabethtown won 11-of-21 faceoffs, but was 0-of-4 on EMO while W&L was 3-for-3.

Weaver led the way with one goal and three assists, while Perrella had two goals.  Witherell and junior midfielder Jonathan Henry (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) totaled one goal and one assist each.  Senior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded five saves.

Junior attackmen Joe Clark and Dan Bednarik logged two goals and one assist each to lead the Blue Jays.  Junior midfielder Jason Clough chipped in a pair of goals and Miracle stopped six shots while playing the duration in goal.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Roanoke for a 1:00 pm contest.
