W&L Men's Lacrosse Downs Hampden-Sydney, 10-7

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee used a four-goal run during the third quarter to post a 10-7 victory over Hampden-Sydney in ODAC men's lacrosse action on Saturday at Wilson Field.

The teams entered the halftime break tied at 4-4, but the Tigers took a 5-4 lead with 9:03 left in the third period on a man-up goal by sophomore midfielder Chandler Shaheen (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) off an assist from senior midfielder Jake Koferl (Huntersville, N.C./Lake Norman).

Senior attackman Kevin Katzmann (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) began the Generals' decisive run when he scored unassisted at the 4:35 mark.  Senior midfielder Christian Zanetis (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) then found Katzmann for another goal at the 3:04 mark that gave W&L the lead back, 6-5.  Senior midfielder Graeme Weaver (Newtown Square, Pa. / Malvern Prep) kept the momentum going with an unassisted tally at the 1:42 mark and first-year attackman A.J. Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) capped the surge on an unassisted goal with 18 seconds left in the frame for an 8-5 W&L advantage.

H-SC made a run to start the fourth period, scoring two straight goals to cut it to an 8-7 game.  Sophomore attackman Connor Pool (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Hunter Brown (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) at 10:40 and then Pool found sophomore attackman Ian Levin (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) for a man-up goal at the 5:59 mark that made it a one-goal game (8-7).  However, Weaver scored unassisted at 4:12 and senior midfielder Andrew Riehl (Reisterstown, Md. / St. Paul's) found the back of the net in transition off the ensuing faceoff for a 10-7 lead at the 4:00 mark.  From there, the Generals' defense tightened and W&L walked away with a win in its conference-opener.

The Blue & White held a 35-31 advantage in shots, while the Tigers claimed a 29-28 edge in ground balls.  W&L had its best showing of the season thus far at the faceoff X, winning 14-of-21 draws.

Witherell paced the Generals' offense with three goals.  Junior attackman Chris Comerford (Manhasset, N.Y. / Chaminade), Katzmann and Weaver all scored two goals apiece.  Senior Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) played all 60 minutes in goal and logged five saves.  Senior defenseman Buck Armstrong (Austin, Texas / Episcopal) and sophomore defenseman Kyle Gifford (Darien, Conn. / Darien) both recorded three ground balls and caused three turnovers in the field.  Senior midfielder Jack Clarke (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Delbarton) went 9-of-14 on faceoffs and notched a team-best five ground balls.

Pool scored three goals and notched one assist to lead Hampden-Sydney.  Koferl added one goal and one assist.  Sophomore Mitch Renfrow (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) registered eight saves while playing the duration in goal. 

Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan for a 7:00 pm contest.
