MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Led by red-hot play from junior Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy), the 12th-ranked Washington and Lee men's golf team improved by five spots on Tuesday to finish in seventh-place out of 14 teams at the Wynlakes Invitational held at the Wynlakes Black Course.
Peccie started his day with consecutive bogies on holes 13, 14 and 15 to drop to +11 with 15 holes left in the tournament. He followed the bogey string with three straight pars before catching fire and recording seven birdies in the final 12 holes to shoot the low round of the tournament with a 68 (-4). He finished with an 80-68—148 (+4) to place in a tie for 12th out of the 83 golfers in the event.
Second-ranked Huntingdon won the tournament with a -1 score of 289-286—575, while top-ranked Emory was second with a 296-287—583 (+7). The Generals posted a 315-292—607 (+31) to climb the team leaderboard on the final day.
Huntingdon's Drew Mathers claimed individual medalist honors after posting a -2 score of 73-69—142. He won by one stroke over four players who all tied for second at -1.
Five Generals bunched together in the individual leaderboard between places 39 and 47. Junior Sean Puleo (Albany, N.Y. / Albany Academy) claimed a tie for 39th by shooting a 78-77—155 (+11), while junior Boyd Peete (Henrico, Va. / St. Christopher's), first-year Austin Sharrett (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin) and senior George May (Topsfield, Mass. / Masconomet) all tied for 44th with a total of +12.
Peete shot 82-74—156, Sharrett carded an 83-73—156 and May posted an 80-76—156 while playing as an individual. Junior Robert Quinilty (Cypress, Texas / Houston Christian) finished in a tie for 47th with a 75-82—157 (+13).
Washington and Lee will return to action on April 28-30 when it competes in the ODAC Championship held at the Bryan Park Champions Course in Greensboro, N.C.
