SAVANNAH, Ga. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee men's golf team finished eighth out of 18 teams following the final round of competition at the The Club at Savannah Harbor Classic on Tuesday.
The Generals finished with a two-day score of 304-306—610 (+34) to place 24 strokes behind the team champion, third-ranked Huntingdon College (586, +10). The tournament featured nine of the Top 20 teams in Division III, including top-ranked Emory, which finished fourth with a 598 (+22). Fellow ODAC members Hampden-Sydney (595, +19) and Guilford (600, +24) placed third and tied for sixth, respectively.
Methodist's Dan Shepherd finished as the individual medalist, carding a one-under par score of 72-71—143 to win by a single stroke over James Mishoe of Guilford and Drew Mathers of Huntingdon.
W&L was paced by junior Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy), who tied for ninth out of the 90 golfers with a 71-76—147 (+3). Peccie had a rough start to the day, shooting +5 on the front nine, before settling down to card a -1 on the back nine.
Classmate Robert Quinilty (Cypress, Texas / Houston Christian) tied for 21st overall with a 75-75—150 (+6), while junior Sean Puleo (Albany, N.Y. / Albany Academy) carded an 80-75—155 (+11) to tie for 44th.
First-year Austin Sharrett (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin) tied for 57th with a 78-80—158 (+14) and junior Boyd Peete (Henrico, Va. / St. Christopher's) completed his tournament in a tie for 82nd with an 86-82—168 (+24).
Washington and Lee returns to action on March 15-17 when it participates in the Jekyll Island Invitational hosted by Oglethorpe College.
