SAVANNAH, Ga. – Washington and Lee junior Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) finished at -4 to win the Invitation at Savannah Harbor Tournament hosted by William & Mary on Saturday and Sunday.
Peccie entered the final round sitting in third place, two strokes behind Evan Davis of Belmont. In Sunday's 18 holes, Peccie shot a -1 score of 71 to better Davis by one stroke. It was his second tournament victory this season after taking the NCAA Division III Preview to begin the fall. Sunday's win is especially impressive when considering that Peccie was playing against a field made up of primarily Division I competition. His final scores were 72-69-71--212 (-4).
South Carolina Beaufort, the only other non-Division I team competing in the event, shot a final round score of 282 to win the team portion of the tournament by two strokes. The Sand Sharks finished with a tally of 295-295-282—872 (+8). Austin Peay was second with a 298-280-296—874 (+10) and North Dakota State was third with a 287-294-294—875 (+11).
As a team, the Generals finished 17th out of the 18 teams, posting a +43 score of 309-293-305—907.
In addition to Peccie, W&L was paced by junior Boyd Peete (Henrico, Va. / St. Christopher's), who tied for 54th out the 95 golfers competing in the tournament, firing a +11 score of 76-75-76—227. Junior Robert Quinilty (Cypress, Texas / Houston Christian) and first-year Austin Sharrett (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin) both shot +18 and tied for 85th. Quinilty shot 80-75-79—234 and Sharrett posted an 81-74-79—234.
First-year John Schindler (Vienna, Va. / Langley) carded an 86-79-82—247 (+31) to round out the Generals in the field. He finished 94th overall.
Washington and Lee returns to action on March 4-5 when it participates in the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate hosted by Berry College in Pine Mountain, Ga.
