FOREST, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2018 men's golf preseason coaches' poll on Tuesday and Washington and Lee was picked to finish second out of the 11 teams in the league.
Guilford was picked first with nine first-place votes and 99 points. W&L received two first-place votes and tallied 90 points to finish second in the voting. Virginia Wesleyan was third with 88 points and was followed by Hampden-Sydney (72), Bridgewater (63), Lynchburg (49), Randolph-Macon (48), Roanoke (34), Shenandoah (31), Emory & Henry (26), and Eastern Mennonite (11).
W&L and Guilford have combined to win 19 of the last 21 ODAC titles and the two teams have finished 1-2 in the championship standings 14 times during that same period. The Generals claimed the 2016 ODAC title and Guilford won the 2017 crown.
The Blue & White advanced to the NCAA Championship for the second straight season in 2017, finishing in 14th-place with a four-round total of 300-306-306-305—1217 (+65). W&L capped the 2016 season with a tie for third at the NCAA Championship, and the Generals enter this spring ninth in the Golfstat Division III rankings following the fall season.
W&L returned three All-ODAC honorees from last season, led by sophomores Brian Peccie (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) and Robert Quinilty (Cypress, Texas / Houston Christian), who both earned First Team All-ODAC accolades. Quinilty also received the ODAC Rookie of the Year Award. Senior Luke Farley (Durham, N.C. / Trinity School) is also back after garnering Third Team All-ODAC accolades last spring.
Peccie notched a 75.82 scoring average across 17 rounds a year ago and he is currently ranked fifth in Division III after the fall campaign in which he posted a 72.5 scoring average across eight rounds.
Quinilty logged a 75.89 stroke average in 18 rounds during his rookie campaign, and he carries a 76.40 average through five rounds this fall.
Farley is a three-time All-ODAC honoree, garnering second team laurels as a first-year, first team honors as a sophomore and third team accolades last year. He also earned first team all-region honors and was named an honorable mention All-American in 2016. He carries a 75.52 career scoring average and is ranked 66th in the Golfstat Division III rankings after the fall campaign.
Sophomore Sean Puleo (Albany, N.Y. / Albany Academy) is another returnee coming off a solid fall campaign. He is currently ranked 38th nationally by Golfstat and he carries a 74.13 scoring average across eight rounds this fall.
Washington and Lee opened the 2018 spring season on Monday at the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate.
