W&L Golf Ties for Third at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – The Washington and Lee golf team shot a 310 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for third out of seven teams at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate held at the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club.

Top-ranked and host school Guilford finished as the team champion after carding a two-day score of 300-290—590.  Bridgewater placed second with a 312-302—614, followed by the Generals (305-310—615) and LaGrange (297-318—615).  Cape Fear Community College (312-324—636) and Wesley (319-317—636) both tied for fifth, while St. Anselm finished seventh with a score of 323-326—649.

Bridgewater's John Phillips was the individual medalist after recording a two-day total of 73-69—142 to finish at par for the tournament.

Senior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) was the top General in the tournament, placing fifth out of 37 competitors with a 73-73—146.  First-year Patrick Clossin (Ooltewah, Tenn./McCallie School) was second on the team and tied for ninth overall with a 78-74—152, while sophomore Mark Sowinski (Greensboro, N.C./Bishop McGuinness) carded a 76-81—157 to tie for 17th overall.

Sophomore Jake Struebing (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) tied for 20th with a score of 78-82—160, and sophomore Jack Cottrill (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) tied for 28th with an 80-83—163.

Washington and Lee returns to action on March 11-13 at the Taylor Made Adidas Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at the Cotton Dike Course in Dataw Island, S.C.
