W&L Golf Opens Spring Season at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – The Washington and Lee golf team shot an opening round score of 305 and is in third place out of seven teams after the first day of competition at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate held at the Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club on Monday.

LaGrange is in the lead after shooting an opening round 297 and is followed closely by host Guilford, who is in second place after carding a 300.  The Generals are third, followed by Cape Fear Community College (312) and Bridgewater (312), Wesley (319) and St. Anselm (323).

Wesley's Cody Pestun is the individual leader thus far after posting an even par score of 71.

The Generals were led during the opening round by senior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal), who shot a 73 and is in a tie for third place out of 37 golfers.  Sophomore Mark Sowinski (Greensboro, N.C./Bishop McGuinness) is tied for 13th after carding a 76, while sophomore Jake Struebing (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) and first-year Patrick Clossin (Ooltewah, Tenn./McCallie School) are both tied for 18th after each posted a 78. Sophomore Jack Cottrill (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) rounded out the W&L golfers with an opening round 80. He is tied for 22nd overall.

Action continues on Tuesday with the final round from the Pine Needles Resort.
