W&L Golf Places Fifth at the Virginia Intercollegiate

SUFFOLK, Va. – The Washington and Lee golf team shot a final round score of 296 to finish fifth out of 10 teams at the Virginia Intercollegiate held at the Nansemond River Golf Club on Monday.

Bridgewater took home the team title after posting a two-day score of 292-300—592.  Averett was second with a 300-294—594 and was followed by Roanoke (305-291—596), Shenandoah (306-298—604), W&L (311-296—607), Lynchburg (300-309—609), Ferrum (310-302—612), Marymount (312-311—623), Randolph-Macon (321-308—629) and Virginia Wesleyan (325-313—638).

Bridgewater's Scott Wakely took home medalist honors after carding a score of 70-71—141 (-3), while W&L senior Wilson Anthony (Fordyce, Ark./Episcopal) tied for 11th with a 74-75—149 (+5).

Sophomore Jake Struebing (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst Central) finished tied for 15th with a 77-73—150 and first-year Patrick Clossin (Ooltewah, Tenn./McCallie School) tied for 20th with an 80-72—152.

Other finishers for the Generals included sophomores Mark Sowinski (Greensboro, N.C./Bishop McGuinness) and Jack Cottrill (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), and first-year Joey Manzinger (Baden, Pa./Sewickley Academy).  Sowinski finished in a tie for 28th (75-80--155), Cottrill placed 29th with an 80-76—156 and Manzinger completed the event in 53rd place with a 97-89—186.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Oct. 24-25 as it participates in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial Tournament hosted by Guilford College.
