LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas / Samuel Clemens) and sophomore guard William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) shot a combined 12-16 from the floor in the first half to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 95-66 victory over Cabrini in the consolation game of the W&L Tournament on Saturday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
The Generals (8-4) trailed 12-11 with 15:16 left in the play in the opening period, but seized control with an 11-1 run over the next 3:54 to assume a 22-13 advantage at the 11:22 mark. Brueggeman got things started with a pair of free throws, and first-year guard Tevin Panchal (Belmont, Calif. / Spire Academy) followed with a triple that made it 16-12. Senior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C. / Broughton) followed with a dunk at the 14:25 mark and the Generals never trailed again.
W&L used a second large run to mount a 28-point lead with 2:45 left in the first half. Leading 24-17 with 10:06 remaining, Brueggeman jump-started the second surge with a three-pointer, and he added three more during the 25-4 run that gave the Blue & White a 49-21 advantage. Kearns posted seven points as well during the run, and the Generals carried a 56-27 lead into the halftime break.
As a team, W&L shot 21-for-40 (.525) in the opening 20 minutes, canning 8-of-19 (.421) from beyond the arc. Kearns (7-8 FG) scored 18 in the first stanza, while Brueggeman (5-8 FG) added 17 markers.
The Generals continued to pour it on in the early portion of the second half, stretching out to a 37-point lead (74-37) following a three-pointer by Kearns with 15:06 left to play. W&L hit a dry spell shortly thereafter, going scoreless for a span of seven minutes, but the lead never dipped below 20 points (81-61) as the Blue & White cruised to the win.
W&L finished 36-73 (.493) from the floor and the Generals held a 55-36 advantage in rebounds. W&L also racked up 26 assists on its 36 made baskets and committed just 13 turnovers.
Kearns led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also had four assists and three rebounds. Brueggeman finished with 17 points, while McMillan contributed 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md. / Georgetown Prep) added nine points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
Cabrini (2-10) shot 27-74 (.365) from the floor and hit only 3-22 (.136) from distance. Senior guard Anthony Wright-Downing led the Cavaliers with 20 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Jarren Abad chipped in 14 points and nine boards.
McMillan was named to the all-tournament team for W&L, while Wright-Downing earned all-tournament honors for Cabrini.
Washington and Lee returns to the court on Wednesday when it hosts Roanoke College for a 7:00 pm contest.
