LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore guard William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) totaled a career-high 29 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the field in the opening half, to lead the Washington and Lee men's basketball team to a 94-78 victory over Mary Washington on Monday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.

The Generals (4-1) shot a blistering 62.5 percent (20-of-32) in the opening 20 minutes to build a 13-point advantage (53-40) at the break. Along with being a perfect 7-of-7 from the field in the first, Brueggeman also was 4-of-4 from the line and sunk four triples on his way to 22 points at intermission.

The Eagles (3-1) came out aggressive to start the second, forcing three W&L turnovers and trimming the lead to 11, 53-42, to force a Blue and White timeout with 18:23 left on the clock. Out of the stoppage, Brueggeman made a jumper in the paint to extend the lead back to 13, and then senior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) followed with a three-pointer to push the margin to 58-42 at the 17:06 mark.

The Generals registered another stop on UMW's next possession, and then Brueggeman made a layup to stretch the lead to 60-42. On the next trip down, sophomore forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) recorded a two-handed slam off an assist from Kearns.

Finally, senior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) capped the 11-0 run with a driving layup to give the Blue and White a 64-42 advantage with 15:34 left in the game. The Generals extended the lead to as large as 28 points in the closing 15 minutes, before a late run by UMW trimmed the score to its final margin, 94-78.

W&L finished the game 35-of-63 (55.6 percent) from the floor and 12-of-24 (50.0 percent) from beyond the arc. Mary Washington shot 39.2 percent (29-of-74) from the field and 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from long range.

The Generals blocked eight shots in the contest and recorded 19 assists. Brueggeman added seven rebounds to his 29 points and notched two steals and two blocks. He was 10-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-7 from downtown. Kearns finished with 14 points and eight assists, while Mitchell had seven points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.

Junior guard Khiorie Stewart led the Eagles with 14 points and four rebounds, while senior forward Johnny Cronin chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

This marked the most points and assists by the Generals this season. The last time W&L had more than 94 points was in a 97-82 win over Eastern Mennonite on January 10, 2018.

The Generals open ODAC play on Wednesday, when they play at Randolph-Macon at 7:00 pm.
