W&L Men's Basketball Topped by No. 25 York (Pa.), 118-110 in OT

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior forward Blayde Reich totaled 44 points and 19 rebounds to lead 25th-ranked York (Pa.) to a 118-110 overtime victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team on Saturday in the championship of the W&L Holiday Tournament. Junior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) led the Blue and White with a career-high 35 points, a career-high 12 rebounds, a career-high six steals and three blocks.

The Generals (7-4) trailed by five (96-91) with 1:35 left in regulation, but a three-pointer by McMillan at the 1:20 mark trimmed the deficit to two, 96-94. After a missed three-pointer by the Spartans (11-0), McMillan was fouled attempting to grab the rebound, and sunk both free throws to tie the contest, 96-96, with 30.5 seconds on the clock.

Senior forward Dalton Myers' layup rolled off the front of the rim for York with under 10 seconds left in the period. W&L secured the rebound and raced the ball down the floor. Junior guard Devin Kearns' (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) contested three-pointer as time expired missed to the right of the hoop to send the game to overtime.

York scored the first four points in just 34 seconds to start the extra frame with all four coming from Reich. The margin was still four (107-103) with 2:07 on the clock, when senior forward Nicholas George (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) was fouled driving to the hoop. He split the pair of free throws, but Reich answered with a layup to extend the spread to five, 109-104, with 1:25 left in the game.

McMillan converted a layup on the Generals' next possession, but sophomore guard Jared Wagner put York up six (112-106) at the 46-second mark, when he hit a three-pointer with a hand in his face and the shot clock was winding down. The Generals attempted to play the foul game down the stretch, but the Spartans made six of eight attempts, and pulled out the eight-point victory.

In a physical game, the Blue and White were whistled for 30 fouls, compared to 19 against York, and had four players foul out. The Spartans took 47 free throws in the contest, converting on 34 (72.3 percent). W&L attempted 30 shots from the foul line and made 19 (63.3 percent).

The Generals had five players in double figures led by McMillan's career-high. McMillan shot 14-of-20 from the floor and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Kearns and George each totaled 19 points. First-year guard William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) registered 15 points off the bench and senior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) had 10 points. Following the contest, McMillan was named to the five-member W&L Holiday Tournament All-Tournament Team.

Reich shot 16-of-23 from the floor to notch his career-high 44 points. His frontcourt mate, Myers, had 35 points, six rebounds and four blocks. Wagner recorded 16 points, six assists and four rebounds.

The Generals built an 18-point lead in the opening 15 minutes of the first half, but the Spartans ended the period on a 19-9 spurt to climb to within eight (51-43). York slowly whittled away the lead in the second, eventually tying the game, 75-75, with 8:07 left in the period. Neither team led by more than five the rest of regulation.

The loss ends the Blue and White's eight-game home winning streak. The Generals return to ODAC play on Wednesday, when they play at Lynchburg at 7:00 pm.
