FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its 2019 field hockey preseason coaches' poll on Friday, and Washington and Lee was picked third out of nine teams with 50 points and one first-place vote.

Defending champion Lynchburg secured the top spot with 64 points and eight first-place tallies. Shenandoah was second with 53 points, and following the Generals was Roanoke in fourth with 42 points and Randolph-Macon in fifth (39 points).

Virginia Wesleyan was sixth with 25 points, and then Eastern Mennonite (12 points) and Ferrum (11 points) rounded out the poll.

The Blue and White advanced to the ODAC Tournament semifinals in 2018, ending the season with an 8-10 overall mark and a 5-3 record in league play. The Generals remained impressive at home, accumulating a 7-1 record at the W&L Turf Field.

W&L returns 16 letterwinners from last year's squad and brings in eight first-years. Senior forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and junior midfielder Caroline Caruso (Millersville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) highlight the returners for the Generals.

Paolano enters the season sixth on the Blue and White career goals list with 28 and seventh in career points (71). A First Team All-ODAC and second team all-state honoree last season, she led W&L in goals (15) and points (30). Caruso was a Third Team All-ODAC selection last fall, starting all 18 games. She ended the year with two assists.

The Generals open the 2019 season on Friday, August 30 at home against Johns Hopkins at 6:00 pm.
