CHANDLER, Ariz. — The National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced its 2018 ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad on Wednesday, and 13 players from the Washington and Lee team garnered the honor.
Among the 13 Generals earning the laurel, senior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) made the team for the fourth time in her career. Junior defenders Olivia Hewitt (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) and Cassie Grebas (Prince George, Va./Maggie Walker Governor's School), sophomore forwards Caroline Grace (Warwick, R.I./Phillips Exeter Academy) and Maisie Strawn (Gloucester, Va./Chatham Hall) and sophomore defenders Graysen Doran (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) and Kelly Fennessy (Bel Air, Md./Roland Park Country School) all received the recognition for the second time.
Sophomore midfielder Abigail Hancock (Darien, Conn./Darien), first-year midfielders Abby Hamilton (Oxford, Pa./Padua Academy) and Stella Noels (Cambridge, Mass./Middlesex School), first-year forward Grace Weise (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Agnes Irwin School), first-year defender Katherine Berman (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) and first-year goalkeeper Sara Amil (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex) garnered the distinction for the first time.
To be named to the National Academic Squad, a player must have earned at least a cumulative 3.30 GPA through the fall term. This year, 1,746 student-athletes made the list, representing 147 schools. The 13 Generals making the team are the most since the team had 13 following the 2014 season.
The Generals went 8-10 overall this past campaign and were 5-3 in the ODAC. W&L advanced to the ODAC Tournament semifinals, falling to Shenandoah, 1-0, in overtime on November 2.
