W&L Field Hockey Falls at Mary Washington, 4-0

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Junior midfielder Lauren Hopkins scored three goals to lead the Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Washington and Lee on Wednesday afternoon at the UMW Turf Stadium.

Hopkins gave the Eagles (4-2) an early 1-0 advantage just 9:42 into the game when she scored unassisted.  First-year midfielder Sydney Keating fed Hopkins for another score at the 30:34 mark and UMW carried a 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Hopkins tallied her third goal at the 47:24 mark off an assist from sophomore forward Izzy Scholz, and sophomore forward Bella Urcia capped the scoring with an unassisted goal at 52:07.

UMW held a 13-6 advantage in shots, while the Generals (1-5) claimed a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.

Sophomore midfielder Caroline Caruso (Millersville, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) paced the W&L offense with three shots, all of which landed on cage.  Senior Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md. / Garrison Forest School) played all 70 minutes in cage and finished with five saves. 

Senior Jessica Cavolt played the first 62:51 in goal for the Eagles, making three saves.  First-year Jillian Lawrence played the final 7:09 and produced three saves as well.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts seventh-ranked Christopher Newport for a 2:00 pm contest.
