Paolano's Overtime Game-Winner Sends Generals Past Shorewomen, 2-1

CHESTERTOWN, Md. — Sophomore forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) scored with 7:08 left in overtime to give the Washington and Lee field hockey team a 2-1 victory at Washington College on Sunday.

With the score tied, 1-1, midway through overtime, the Generals' (1-1) defense sent the ball to the midfield on a counter attack. Paolano received the pass on the run and only one Shorewomen (0-2) defender and junior goalkeeper Morgan Domanico stood between her and the goal.

Paolano used one touch to beat the defender, and had just the keeper in front of her as she approached the scoring circle. Domanico came off her line to try to stop the break, but Paolano directed the ball to the left of the advancing keeper to send W&L home a winner. The goal marked the second of the season for Paolano and the second game-winning tally of her career.

W&L held a 15-7 advantage in shots in the contest and recorded 10 penalty corners compared to five for Washington College. Junior goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) stopped four shots, while Domanico made seven saves. While not shown in the box score, senior defender Lilly MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft School) halted multiple Shorewomen scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the second half and overtime.

Washington College registered the first goal of the contest in the 28th minute of the opening half. With the ball on the far side, junior forward Alison Pantazes sent a pass to her twin sister, junior forward Emily Pantazes, in the center of the circle. Emily Pantzes redirected the ball just inside the far post to give the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead.

The Generals tied the contest, 1-1, early in the second. In the 41st minute, junior forward Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's School) fired a shot at the goal, but Domanico kicked the ball out to the center of the circle. Senior forward Grace Bowen (Hampton, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) corralled the loose ball and her ensuing shot beat Domanico for her first goal of the season.

This marked the first time the Blue and White has had back-to-back overtime games since the 2015 season. W&L lost in double overtime to Shenandoah, 2-1, on October 16, 2015 and then defeated Randolph-Macon, 5-4, in overtime on October 24, 2015.

The Generals return to action on Saturday at Kenyon at 12:00 pm.
