ASHLAND, Va. — Senior midfielder Kendall Peterson (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 2-0 victory at Randolph-Macon on Wednesday evening. Sophomore goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) also notched her third shutout of the season.
Despite holding a 16-3 advantage in shots in the first half, the Generals (7-4, 3-0 ODAC) could not score on the Yellow Jackets (1-8, 0-3 ODAC), and the two teams went into intermission tied, 0-0.
W&L put the first goal on the board 2:46 into the second stanza. Peterson controlled the ball at the top of the circle, and fired a shot at the cage. The ball was deflected by a defender, but popped over the goalkeeper and into the cage. It marked the first goal of the season for Peterson.
The Blue and White added to its lead in the 58th minute. Peterson had the ball on the far side outside the circle, and made a long pass to the front of the cage.
First-year forward Lauren Paolano (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) dove in from the near side and redirected the ball into the corner of the goal to put the Generals up 2-0. It was the seventh goal for Paolano this year, and the fourth assist for Peterson.
W&L held a commanding 30-5 advantage in shots and took 15 penalty corners compared to only four for R-MC. Yavalar made four saves in 70 minutes, and junior goalkeeper Kelsey Stanley suffered the loss, while stopping 13 shots.
This marked the first road win of the season for the Blue and White. The Generals next compete at McDaniel on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
