WINCHESTER, Va. – Senior midfielder Kelani Bailey scored off an assist from senior midfielder Presha Merritt with 1:16 left in double-overtime to lift Shenandoah to a 2-1 victory over Washington and Lee on Friday evening at Shentel Stadium.
The Generals (7-6, 3-1) tied the game with 5:23 left in regulation when first-year midfielder Audrey Brady (Far Hills, N.J. / Brooks School) found the goal off a cross played in front of the goal by sophomore defender Maggie Sands (Glen Arm, Md. / Notre Dame Prep).
Both teams had several scoring opportunities in each of the extra sessions, but neither could break through until Merritt played the ball to Bailey who got a touch from the corner of goal, beating W&L first-year goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md. / Garrison Forest School) for the game-winner.
Neither team could find the goal in the first half, but the Hornets (9-4, 4-0) struck first at the 39:27 mark with a goal by senior defender Alana Meadows off an assist from Bailey.
Shenandoah held a 28-12 advantage in shots, while W&L had a 6-4 edge in penalty corners. Yavalar played all 98:44 in goal and recorded 17 saves in the contest, the sixth-most stops in program history. Junior Jessica Brown also played the duration for the Hornets, making seven saves.
