W&L Field Hockey Loses at No. 16 CNU, 1-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team pushed 16th-ranked Christopher Newport to the final minute on Saturday, but lost, 1-0, at Newport News, Va.

The Captains (4-1) scored the game's lone goal 15 minutes into the second half. Sophomore attacker Josie Morgan had the ball in the center of the circle and passed it to senior attacker Samantha Snider on the left side. Snider quickly pushed the ball into the back of the cage for her third tally of the season.

The Generals (2-4) almost tied the game in the final minute. Junior defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) inserted the ball off a penalty corner with 12 seconds remaining in the game, and it found first-year midfielder Kendall Bernard (Houston, Texas/St. John's School).

From the center of circle, Bernard struck the ball at the goal, but CNU junior goalkeeper Bailey Lien made the save with her outstretched stick to preserve a Captain's victory.

CNU led in shots, 18-6, and held a 16-8 advantage in penalty corners. First-year goalkeeper Ariyel Yavalar (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest School) played the full 70 minutes for W&L with 11 saves. Sophomore defender Lilly MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft School) and junior midfielder Kendall Peterson (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) each recorded a defensive save. Lien finished the contest with three saves for the Captains.

The Generals will play their first home game of the season when they host 12th-ranked Catholic on Monday at 3:00 pm.
