W&L Field Hockey Falls in Overtime, 1-0, at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team lost 1-0 in overtime at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday to open the 2015 season. Sophomore midfielder Morgan Pothast scored the game's lone goal 6:01 into the extra period to give the Blue Jays (1-0) the victory.

Pothast scored the game-winner after a long ball was played into the circle. W&L  sophomore goalkeeper Jacqueline Llewellyn (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) came out to stop the ball, but Pothast dribbled around the diving Llewellyn before finding the back of the goal to win the game.

Llewellyn finished the contest with eight saves in 76:01. She kept the Generals (0-1) in the contest early in the second half when she stopped a penalty stroke with 24:21 left in the game. Senior defender Elena Gresick took the penalty stroke for the Blue Jays and fired a shot low and to the left corner, but Llewellyn slid over to make the save and keep the score at 0-0.

The Blue and White took eight shots over the course of the contest with five on goal, but could not tally a score. Sophomore Greta Helvie stopped all five shots for Johns Hopkins to secure the victory.

Junior Kendall Peterson (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) led W&L with two shots on goal and also had a defensive save with 2:22 left in the second half.  The Blue Jays took 14 shots, but the Blue and White had 11 penalty corners compared to just five for Johns Hopkins.

The Generals next play at Sewanee on Thursday at 8:00 pm eastern time.
