ASHLAND, Va. — With two second-half goals, Randolph-Macon defeated the Washington and Lee field hockey team, 3-2, on Saturday in Ashland.
The two teams went into halftime tied, 1-1, but the Yellow Jackets (6-10, 5-2 ODAC) took a 2-1 advantage on a goal by senior defender Olivia Newman off a penalty corner seven minutes into the second period. R-MC stretched the lead to 3-1 three minutes later on senior defender Carrie Jacobs' second goal of the game and the 12th of the year.
The Generals (9-7, 3-4 ODAC ) cut the deficit to 3-2 when sophomore forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) scored from the left side of the circle with 23 minutes left in the game. It marked Waxter's 11th goal of the season. Sophomore defender Kendall Peterson (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) assisted on the tally. The Generals took three shots in the final 20 minutes, but failed to score the equalizer.
First-year Kelsey Stanley played 54:51 at goalkeeper for the Yellow Jackets, making nine saves. Junior goalkeeper Shannon McMurray came in for the final 15:09, and stopped three shots. First-year Jacqueline Llewellyn (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) started the game for the Blue and White and made four saves, while allowing three goals. Junior Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) played the final 22:57 and recorded three saves.
W&L led in shots, 17-15, and held a 14-9 advantage in shots on goal. The Generals took eight penalty corners compared to seven by R-MC. First-year midfielder Abby Avery (Houston, Texas/St. John's) tallied W&L's first goal 11 minutes into the first half. It marked her fifth goal of the year.
The Generals play their final regular season home game on Wednesday, when they host Sweet Briar at 7:00 pm.
