SALEM, Va. — Junior forward Charlotte MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft) recorded her first career hat trick, as the Washington and Lee field hockey team shutout Roanoke, 3-0, on Wednesday at Kerr Stadium.
MacDonald gave the Generals (9-6, 3-3 ODAC) a 1-0 lead just 5:48 into the game off an assist from sophomore forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School). MacDonald stretched the lead to 2-0 just two minutes later when she beat senior goalkeeper Candice Fisher on the left side of the cage. First-year midfielder Abby Avery (Houston, Texas/St. John's) was credited with the assist on the goal.
The Blue and White scored the final tally with no time on the clock. After a Maroon (7-9, 2-4 ODAC) foul, the Generals were awarded a penalty corner with 13 seconds left. With one last opportunity and no time on the clock, MacDonald fired a shot into the back of the cage to register the hat trick. She now has eight goals this season.
The three goals are tied for the third most by a W&L player in a single game. It marked the second consecutive game that a General totaled three goals. Waxter tallied three against Eastern Mennonite on October 15. Before Waxter, Steph Mansey last scored three goals in 2009.
First-year goalkeeper Jacqueline Llewellyn (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) recorded her first collegiate shutout. She made four saves in 70 minutes to improve to 2-1 on the year. Fisher played the entire game for Roanoke, stopping five shots. W&L out-shot the Maroons, 12-5, and held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
The Generals travel to Randolph-Macon on Saturday for a 11:30 am contest.
