LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored five goals in the second half, with two by first-year midfielder Abby Avery (Houston, Texas/St. John's), on its way to a 6-0 victory over Ferrum on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (6-5) entered intermission with a 1-0 lead, but quickly stretched the advantage to 2-0 in the 40th minute on a goal by senior forward Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga).
A little over four minutes later, W&L pushed the lead to 3-0 over the Panthers (1-9) on a tally by sophomore forward Allie Barry (Beverly, Mass./Brooks School). Barry received a pass from sophomore forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) and hit the back of the cage from the center of the circle. Waxter finished the game with one goal and two assists.
Junior forward Charlotte MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft) scored the fourth goal for the Blue and White, and Avery tallied the final two. Avery notched both of her goals from the middle of the circle. The first she jammed past first-year goalkeeper Courtney Gosslin (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis), and the second she slipped just inside the far post.
The Generals took 37 shots in the contest, while Ferrum failed to register a shot. W&L also led in penalty corners, 13-2.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) played the first half in goal for the Blue and White, while first-year Jacqueline Llewellyn (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) played the final 35 minutes. Gosslin made 14 saves in 70 minutes, while allowing six goals.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday, when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan on 6:00 pm.
