LEXINGTON, Va. — Despite leading in shots, 16-7, and penalty corners, 9-2, the Washington and Lee field hockey team fell to McDaniel, 2-0, at the W&L Turf Field on Saturday.
The Generals (4-2) had chance after chance in both halves, but couldn't get any of their 10 shots on goal to hit the back of the cage. Green Terror (3-2) senior goalkeeper Caila White (Delmar, Md./Delmar) stopped nine shots, and senior midfielder Natalie Price (Elkton, Md./Elkton) made one defensive save to halt the Blue and White offense.
McDaniel took advantage of its only shot on goal in the first half, scoring on a penalty corner at the 15:32 mark. Senior defender Bayley Vohs (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) inserted the ball to the top of the circle, and junior defender Rachel Cressman (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) fired a shot to the bottom left corner to beat junior goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School).
The Green Terror would take the 1-0 lead into the second half, but wouldn't secure its second goal until W&L pulled Axelrod with 6:47 left in the game for an extra position player. Without a goalkeeper on the field for the Generals, McDaniel's first-year forward Gabrielle Yore (Olney, Md./Sherwood) collected a deflection in front of the goal, and stuffed in her fifth tally of the season with 3:52 left in the contest.
First-year Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) led the Generals in shots with five, and senior forward Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and sophomore forward Allie Barry (Beverly, Mass./Brooks School) each added four.
The Generals open ODAC play on Wednesday when they play at Lynchburg at 6:00 pm.
