MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team scored two goals in the first half on its way to a 3-1 victory over Hendrix in a neutral-site contest at Rhodes on Thursday.
Senior forward Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) recorded the Generals' (3-0) first goal 6:37 into the opening period. It marked her second goal of the season. First-year forward Allie Barry (Beverly, Mass./Brooks School) pushed the W&L lead to 2-0 with a tally in the 28th minute. The goal was the first of Barry's collegiate career.
The Generals took the 2-0 advantage into the second half, but the Warriors (0-3) cut the deficit in half, 2-1, on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Raychl Reger with 3:07 remaining on the clock. W&L scored its final goal with one second left in the game, as sophomore forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) notched her third tally of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth).
Junior goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) registered her third win of the season. She played the full 70 minutes, while making three saves. Junior defender Sally Curtiss (Morristown, N.J./Madison) also recorded a defensive save. Sophomore Gabryele Pochron made 22 saves for Hendrix, allowing all three goals.
The Generals took 31 shots in the contest with Waxter leading the team with seven. The Warriors totaled just seven shots. W&L also led in penalty corners, 15-8.
This is only the second time in program history the team has started the season 3-0. It also achieved the feat in 2006. The Generals have never begun the year 4-0.
W&L will stay in Memphis and take on Rhodes on Friday at 5:30 pm.
