LEXINGTON, Ky. — First-year midfielder Abby Avery (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and junior forward Charlotte MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft) each scored two goals to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 5-0 victory at Transylvania on Tuesday.
Avery recorded her first collegiate goal at 18:43 to give the Generals (2-0) a 1-0 lead. Her second tally came with 13 minutes left in the game and pushed the Blue and White advantage to 4-0.
McDonald's first goal came with 7:38 left in the opening half, and gave W&L a 2-0 lead. She also scored the team's final goal with 4:40 left in the contest off an assist from first-year forward Maggie Lana (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Holy Trinity). The goals were the first and second of the season for MacDonald, and the assist marked the first in Lana's collegiate career.
Sophomore forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) registered the Generals' other tally. She gave the team a 3-0 lead eight minutes into the second half. Waxter now has two goals this season.
W&L led in shots, 24-3, and took seven penalty corners compared to five for the Pioneers (1-2). Junior goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) registered her second career shutout, making two saves in 70 minutes. Senior Sara Aschbacher took the loss for Transylvania. She stopped 13 shots, while allowing all five goals.
The last time W&L won the first two games to start a season was in 2006 when the team began the year 3-0 and finished 14-6 overall.
The game was delayed an hour from its original start time of 7:00 pm due to lighting. The Generals continue their road trip by heading to Memphis, Tenn., to take on Hendrix on Thursday for a neutral-site contest starting at 4:00 pm eastern time.
