W&L Field Hockey Falls to Randolph-Macon, 3-1

LEXINGTON, Va. — Randolph-Macon junior defender Carrie Jacobs (Orange, Va./Orange County) scored two goals to lead the Yellow Jackets (9-8, 6-1 ODAC) past the Washington and Lee field hockey team, 3-1, on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals' (4-14, 2-5 ODAC) lone goal came with 12:32 left in the second half on a penalty stroke. Senior midfielder Lauren Boone (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) took the shot for W&L, and beat senior goalkeeper Steph Talley (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) low and to the left for her fourth goal of the season.

Jacobs notched both of her tallies in the first half. She recorded the first just 31 seconds into the game. After stealing the ball from a W&L defender, Jacobs ripped a shot to the top left corner to give R-MC a 1-0 lead.

Fifteen minutes later, Jacobs pushed the lead to 2-0. She collected the ball off a rebound, and slipped it inside the far post for the goal. Heading out of halftime with a 2-0 lead, the Yellow Jackets extended the lead to 3-0 on a tally by junior midfielder Catherine Pricone (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee).

Off a penalty corner, R-MC centered the ball and fired a shot toward the goal. It bounced up and over sophomore goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School), but first-year defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School) stopped the ball for a defensive save. Pricone was there for the rebound and stuffed the ball into the cage for the goal.

Axelrod played 64:40 at goalkeeper for the Generals and had seven saves. W&L pulled the goalie for the final 5:20 for an extra field player. Talley recorded nine saves in 70 minutes. Senior defender Olivia Newman (Orange, Va./Orange County) tallied three defensive saves to halt the Blue and White offense.

W&L's best opportunity to add another goal came at the end of the first half. As time expired on a penalty corner, Boone took a shot that got by Talley, but Newman was there to make the save. First-year forwards Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) and Camilla Davis (Richmond, Va./Governor's School) took shots off of rebounds, but Talley rejected both and cleared the ball to end the half.

The Generals will play their final regular season game on Wednesday, when they host Bridgewater at 7:00 pm.
