SEWANEE, Tenn. – Washington and Lee amassed 501 yards of total offense, scored on a blocked punt, and forced three Sewanee turnovers en route to a 47-14 victory over the Tigers on Saturday at Harris Stadium.
The Generals (2-0) opened a 13-0 halftime lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Collin Sherman (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cox) and a 62-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Trey Laughlin (Henrico, Va. / Douglas Freeman) to sophomore running back Montgomery Owen (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell).
The W&L lead grew to 20-0 just 52 seconds into the second half when the Generals blocked a punt from the Sewanee 34-yardline which was returned 20 yards for a touchdown by junior linebacker Logan Brand (Roanoke, Va. / Hidden Valley).
The Tigers (1-1) got on the board at the 13:04 mark of the third period on a trick play that featured a 48-yard completion from junior wide receiver Micah Maes to sophomore wide receiver Colin May. However, the Generals responded on the next possession with a 7-play, 55-yard drive that was finished off on a 2-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Drew Richardson (Watkinsville, Ga. / Athens Academy).
Following an interception by first-year linebacker Alex Andros (Fredericksburg, Va. / Courtland) on the next series, Laughlin scored on a 3-yard touchdown run five plays later for a 33-7 lead. Richardson added another rushing touchdown and first-year running back Alex Wertz (Sterling, Va. / Dominion) ripped off a 40-yard touchdown run with 3:20 remaining in the game in posting the 33-point win.
The Generals ran for 402 yards on the day led by Richardson, who rushed for a career-high 133 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Laughlin completed 2-of-2 passes for 99 yards and one touchdown, and ran eight times for 60 yards and a touchdown. Sherman ran for 57 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while sophomore running back Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) amassed 69 yards and 12 carries. It broke a school-record string of nine straight 100-yard rushing games for Breece.
On defense, W&L was paced by junior linebacker Will Corry (Watkinsville, Ga. / Athens Academy), who posted eight tackles and 2.5 sacks. First-year safety Dean Johnson (Atlanta, Ga. / Marist) posted nine tackles and first-year cornerback Sam Neale (Charlottesville, Va. / Charlottesville) logged eight tackles and an interception.
Sewanee was led by junior quarterback Alex Darras, who completed 31-of-51 passes for 325 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions. He was also sacked five times. Sophomore wide receiver Cyrus McCullough caught six passes for 82 yards and senior defensive lineman Karim Antoine led the defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Maryville (Tenn.) for a 1:00 pm contest.
