W&L Football Falls to Emory & Henry Late, 45-42

EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry used a 17-play, 79-yard drive to score a 1-yard touchdown run with 11 seconds remaining to produce a 45-42 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium.

Emory & Henry (2-2, 1-0) grabbed an early lead on the first possession of the game, as junior defensive back Justin Banks stripped the ball away and scampered 27 yards for a touchdown just 1:22 into the game.

The Generals (2-2, 0-1) played from behind for much of the remainder of the game, but battled their way back to take a 42-38 lead following a pair of touchdown drives in the fourth quarter.

The Wasps held a 38-28 lead late in the third quarter and W&L mounted an 11-play, 74-yard drive to pull within three points on a 1-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Matt Sgro (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum).  The Generals' defense forced a 3-and-out on the next series and proceeded to string together another 11-play drive that covered 65 yards to take the lead for the first time with 6:43 left to play.   First-year running back Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) finished off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run that gave W&L a 42-38 lead.

E&H gained no more than 14 yards on any play during the game-winning drive, but methodically moved the ball down the field, which ate up the clock.  First-year running back Brady Justice produced the biggest play of the drive, gaining 14 yards to the W&L 6-yardline on a 4th-and-3 run.  Justice then punched across the game-winner from 1-yard out three plays later.

W&L gained 539 yards of total offense and 444 rushing yards while ripping off several long touchdown runs.  However, the Blue & White simply could not overcome two costly turnovers and a missed 37-yard field goal as time expired in the first half.

Sgro scored the Generals' first touchdown on a 76-yard jaunt, while senior running back Josh Malm (Scottsville, Va. / Monticello) tallied a 35-yard touchdown run in the first quarter as well.  Breece scored on a 54-yard rush in the third quarter to pull the Blue & White within three points (31-28).

Breece finished with a career-high 195 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.  Sgro rushed for a career-best 156 yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries, and he also completed 8-of-14 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.  Senior linebacker Max Garrett (Fairfield, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) paced the defense with 12 tackles.

The Wasps finished with 453 total yards led by 135 rushing yards and three touchdowns from Justice.  Senior quarterback Kevin Saxton completed 22-of-31 passes for 220 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore wide receiver Derrick Yates hauled in eight passes for 85 yards and a score.  Banks paced the E&H defense with 14 tackles and the fumble return for a touchdown.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Washington University of St. Louis for a 12:00 pm contest.
