W&L Football Produces a 24-14 Win Over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Senior running back Walker Brand (Roanoke, Va. / Hidden Valley) rushed for a career-high 154 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Washington and Lee football team to a 24-14 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at Fritz Burns Stadium.

The Generals (2-1) took a 7-0 lead just 2:41 into the game when Brand capped off a 5-play, 83-yard game-opening drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.  Senior cornerback Grey Reames (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell) then intercepted CMS senior quarterback Sam Healy on the third play of the next series, setting W&L up on the Stags' 41-yardline.  Nine plays later, W&L first-year placekicker Jarrett Wright (Charlotte, N.C. / Ardrey Kell) booted a 27-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (1-1) threatened to score early in the second quarter, but W&L junior safety Thomas Freeland (Franklin, Tenn. / Ensworth) intercepted Healy on the Generals' 1-yardline to keep the Stags off the scoreboard and W&L carried the 10-0 lead into the half.

The Blue & White forced CMS into a 3-and-out on the first possession of the second half, and proceeded to march 93 yards on 14 plays to assume a 17-0 lead with 5:28 left in the third quarter.  Brand did much of the damage on the drive, rushing for 74 yards including a 1-yard touchdown plunge, his ninth touchdown of the season.

Two plays into the next possession, Freeland intercepted his second pass of the day, setting up W&L on the CMS 12-yardline.  Four plays later, first-year running back Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) crossed the goal line from two yards out for a 24-0 lead at 1:54 of the third period.

Claremont finally got on the board just 59 seconds later, moving 65 yards in six plays to make it 24-7 with 1:54 left in the penultimate quarter.  Healy hooked up with senior wide receiver Trey Smith from 16 yards out for the score.

The Stags began to shut down the Generals' offense, but could only push across one more score in the fourth quarter, as Healy found paydirt on a 13-yard touchdown run with 7:21 remaining in the game.  From there, the W&L defense stiffened to produce the Generals' second consecutive victory.

W&L compiled 305 yards of total offense, including 268 yards on the ground, led by Brand.  Breece tallied 47 yards on 10 carries, while senior quarterback Matt Sgro (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) notched 38 yards on 14 carries.  He also completed 2-of-6 passes for 37 yards.  On defense, senior linebacker Max Garrett (Fairfield, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) led the way with eight tackles.  Freeland posted six tackles and a pair of interceptions.

The Stags amassed 376 yards of total offense led by Healy, who completed 19-of-33 passes for 194 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions.  He also rushed 10 times for 40 yards and a score.  Senior running back Shane Pico totaled 83 yards on 13 carries and Smith caught five passes for 47 yards and a touchdown.  Junior defensive back Mackenzie Cooney posted a game-high 10 tackles.

Washington and Lee now has a bye week and will return to action on September 30 when it travels to Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm contest.
