HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney on Saturday in the ODAC-openers for both teams.
Sophomore pitcher Chase Mayberry gave up just one run on five hits in 7.0 innings to lead the Tigers (7-4, 2-0 ODAC) to a 5-1 victory in game one. H-SC then totaled 14 hits and 13 runs to take the second contest, 13-2, in eight innings.
H-SC claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the opening contest, but an RBI groundout by junior first baseman Zach Loewenberg (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) evened the score (1-1) in the top of the second for the Generals (7-9, 0-2 ODAC). In the fourth, senior left fielder Moe Gothe pushed the Tigers in front, 2-1, with a sacrifice fly.
Senior catcher Devin Daugherty extended the H-SC advantage to 4-2 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Tigers added one insurance run in the eighth to reach the final score.
Senior David Van Geluwe (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) suffered the loss for the Blue and White to fall to 1-2. He gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks in 4.0 innings. Mayberry registered four strikeouts in his seven innings, as he improved to 1-1. Sophomore Jonathan Triesler threw the final 2.0 innings for H-SC to record his third save of the season.
W&L grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning in game two. Sophomore center fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) led off the frame with a double. Following a walk by senior third baseman Paul Diven (Sparrows Point, Md./Archbishop Spalding), senior right fielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) laid down a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position. First-year designated hitter Bradford Martin (Ball Ground, Ga./Creekview) then brought both players home on a two-run single to give the Generals the lead.
The Tigers quickly knotted the game (2-2) in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by junior right fielder Blake Hartman. Hampden-Sydney then took the lead for good in the third with a five-run rally. Daugherty capped the scoring in the frame with a two-run double to push the lead to 7-2.
H-SC put the game away in the fourth with another five-run inning. The second game was eventually called after the top of the eighth inning due to darkness.
First-year Nic Graziano secured the victory to move to 1-1. He allowed two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings. First-year Peyton McCann (Midlothian, Va./James River) took the loss for W&L. He allowed three runs on three hits and five walks in 2.0 innings.
