FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Methodist scored four unanswered runs on its way to a 4-1 victory over the Washington and Lee baseball team on Wednesday at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
The Generals (4-3) struck first in the top of the first. Sophomore center fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) reached second with a one-out double to right center, and then junior first baseman Zach Loewenberg (Baltimore, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) brought him home with a two-out RBI single to center.
The Monarchs (7-1) evened the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the frame. With a runner on second and one out, sophomore designated hitter Alex Kachler registered a one-run double to plate sophomore shortstop Matthias Carter.
Methodist took the lead (2-1) in the third on a two-out RBI single by Kachler. The Monarchs held a one-run advantage until the seventh, when MU added two insurance runs. Sophomore center fielder Clay Richardson registered an RBI single, and the Monarchs tallied their final run on a squeeze play to push the spread to 4-1.
The Blue and White had runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth, but a strikeout ended W&L's last real scoring opportunity. First-year pitcher Mason Shuffler (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) suffered the loss for the Generals to fall to 0-1. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in 2.2 innings.
First-year pitcher Tristan Luck (3-0) notched the victory for the Monarchs. He gave up just one run on two hits with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings. First-year Will Walker threw a perfect ninth inning to record his fourth save of the year.
W&L was held to just four hits in the contest with Loewenberg notching two. He finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI and a walk. Kachler was 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead Methodist.
The Generals return to action on Friday, when they host top-ranked SUNY Cortland at 12:30 pm.
