W&L Baseball Drops a 7-3 Decision to No. 4 Emory

ATLANTA, Ga. – Fourth-ranked Emory University scored four runs in the eighth inning to come away with a 7-3 victory over the Washington and Lee baseball team on Saturday at Chappell Park.

The teams were tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the eighth, when the Eagles led off the inning with a pair of infield singles and a walk to load the bases.  Junior first baseman Buddy Terp then plated the go-ahead run for Emory when he was hit by a pitch from first-year right hander Kenneth Hartzfield (Marietta, Ga. / Westminster School).  A second run scored on an RBI ground out to third base by senior third baseman Philip Maldari, and the rally was capped by junior shortstop Nick Chambers, who plated a pair of runs on a single to centerfield.  Junior right hander David Van Geluwe (Virginia Beach, Va. / Frank W. Cox) relieved Hartzfield, recording the final two outs to end the inning.

W&L (2-2) got the lead off man on base to start the ninth inning when sophomore Zach Loewenberg (Lutherville-Timonium, Md. / Friends School of Baltimore) pinch hit and laced a single to left, but the Eagles closed the door to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Emory scored first in the contest, plating an unearned run on a W&L throwing error in the second inning.  The Generals tied it up in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single by junior right fielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala. / Tuscaloosa Academy), but EU grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single by first-year centerfielder Richard Brereton.

W&L answered with another run to tie the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth, as junior second baseman Austin Crane (Darien, Conn. / Fairfield College Prep) led off the inning with a single to right field and scored four batters later on a wild pitch.

The score was knotted until the bottom of the seventh, when Emory pushed across another unearned run following a pair of W&L errors.  Once again, the Generals were able to level the score, this time on an RBI single by senior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) that scored sophomore shortstop Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal School) in the top of the eighth.  However, the Eagles then assumed control with the four-run frame that decided the outcome.

Junior right hander Tyler Murphy (Chesapeake, Va. / Greenbrier Christian Academy) started and allowed just seven hits and one earned run (3 runs total) in six innings of work.  He stuck out three with two walks.  Hartzfield was saddled with the loss (0-1), surrendering four earned runs in 1.1 innings.

At the plate, the Generals were paced by Weston, who went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.  Feeley finished 2-for-4 and Smalley was 1-of-4 with an RBI.

Senior left hander Jackson Weeg earned the win (1-0) for Emory after striking out 18 batters in eight innings of work.  He allowed six hits and walked just one batter.  Chambers finished 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Eagles at the plate.  Maldari also collected two hits in four at-bats.

The Generals and Eagles will play a double-header on Sunday with the first game beginning at 11:00 am.
