Stevenson Tops W&L Baseball, 8-2

Lexington, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team allowed seven combined runs in the second and third innings, which led to an 8-2 loss to Stevenson at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Monday.

After a 1-2-3 first, starter Matt Hedberg (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) gave up a single to junior Scott Merkel (Hampstead, Md./Calvert Hall) to start the second. Following a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt, first-year Davis Grove (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) hit a ball sharply at third baseman Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood). Nault fielded the ball and had Merkel caught between third and home, but a poor throw allowed Merkel to get back to third and Grove to reach on a fielder's choice.

The Mustangs (10-2) then hit back-to-back RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead. Stevenson scored its final run of the inning on a groundout by Brad Blum (Olney, Md./Magruder), which plated senior Heath Johnson (New Castle, Del.Wilmington).

The Generals (7-7) went in order in the bottom of the second, and the Mustangs put the game out of reach in the third. Hedberg forced the first two batters to fly out to left, but then allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases. Johnson followed with a two-run single to right, and then sophomore Bret Schilling (Catonsville, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) connected on his own two-RBI single to right to push the score to 7-0. Hedberg forced Blum to line out to center to end the inning, but the damage was already done.

Stevenson plated its final run in the fifth on a RBI ground out by Schilling. W&L got on the scoreboard in the sixth. Senior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) hit a one-out single off the leg of starting pitcher Greg Myers (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven). Then, senior Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill/Loyola Academy) roped a double down the right field line to put runners at second and third. Senior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) connected on a RBI groundout, and senior Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) hit a RBI single up the middle to put the score at its final margin of 8-2.

Myers (3-1) went 7.0 innings and only gave up five hits. He allowed two earned runs with four strikeouts and three walks in his third victory of the year. Hedberg (0-3) suffered the defeat, pitching 3.0 innings and giving up seven runs (five earned). Sophomore Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) threw 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and struck out three, while allowing one hit.

The Generals look to end their three-game losing streak on Thursday when they host Southern Virginia at 3:00 pm.
