R-MC Stymies W&L's Bats in Doubleheader Sweep

ASHLAND, Va. — The Randolph-Macon pitching staff held the Washington and Lee baseball team to just two runs in 22 innings Sunday on its way to a doubleheader sweep. The Yellow Jackets (6-6, 2-2 ODAC) won the first game, 5-0, and then came back to win, 3-2, in 13 innings in game two.

The Generals (7-6, 2-2 ODAC) struck first in the second game with two runs in the fifth. Sophomore second baseman Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) hit a RBI double to left center, and junior center fielder Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) plated Biumi with a double down the left field line.

R-MC tied the game in the sixth off of reliever Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School). After walking the bases loaded with two outs, Rudolph walked the next two batters to bring the score to 2-2.

After the sixth, the two squads went the next six innings without scoring a run. Each team had opportunities, but it took until the bottom of the 13th for the tie to be broken. With one out, senior first baseman Jon Witt reached on an error by senior shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day). First-year Nicholas Williamson pinch ran for Witt and advanced to third on a two-out single by first-year shortstop Travis Lodge. Sophomore third baseman Nate Meiners ended the game with a RBI single up the middle to plate Williamson.

Sophomore Matt Hedberg (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) took the loss, giving up one unearned run in 0.2 innings. Sophomore JT Williamson (1-1) won his first game after pitching a perfect 13th inning. Junior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) started the game for the Generals and went five innings. He did not allow a run, while striking out four. Senior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) pitched 6.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets used six pitchers in the contest, but only allowed two runs on seven hits in 13.0 innings. Sophomore Jake Bram started the game and gave up two runs in 5.2 innings.

Senior Michael Helbig controlled the first game from the mound for the Yellow Jackets. He held the Generals scoreless in 7.0 innings, while only allowing four hits. He also struck out nine with only three walks to improve to 2-2 on the year. Sophomore Glenn McLaughlin pitched the final two innings.

Senior catcher Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) was the only W&L player to tally multiple hits in the game. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Senior Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) took the loss for the Generals. He went 6.0 innings, allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts. Shaw dropped to 2-1 this season.

Randolph-Macon scored four of its five runs in the fourth inning. Witt hit a RBI single down the left field line, and Lodge followed with a one-run single into right.

After a RBI fielder's choice by senior second baseman Austin Carpenter, first-year left fielder Michael Trentham plated the fourth run of the inning with a RBI single down the right field line. The Yellow Jackets tallied their fifth and final run of the game on a sacrifice fly by senior center fielder Jeb Weymouth.

The Generals face Stevenson on Monday, March 11, at Cap'n Dick Smith Field at 3:00 pm.
