FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference has announced that Washington and Lee student-athletes Megan Engeland (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Samantha Yates (Birmingham, Ala./St. Paul's School) and Patrick Ryan (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) have been honored as the ODAC Player of the Week in their respective sports for the week ending October 7.
All seniors, Engeland was selected as the ODAC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week, Yates was tabbed as the ODAC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week and Ryan earned ODAC Football Defensive Player of the Week recognition.
Engeland led the women’s soccer team to a 2-0 record in ODAC play last week, totaling four goals on nine shots in the two wins. Her week was highlighted by her second career hat trick in the Generals’ 4-2 road win at Shenandoah on Friday night, also her first multi-goal game of the season. Engeland now sits in seventh place on the all-time goals list with 35 scores in her career.
Yates paced the Blue and White to second place at the CNU Invite on Saturday, with the Generals finishing behind Division I William & Mary. Yates was second overall out of 45 runners on the 6k course, registering a time of 22:27.00. It marked a new season-best time for Yates, and it is the second-fastest 6k time in the ODAC this year.
Ryan helped the W&L football team return to the win column with a 30-20 result at Bridgewater. He was twice involved in the turnover game with a 37-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown, the first scoop and score by a Generals defender since October 7, 2006. He also added an interception and four tackles to his line.
All three squads will get back in action this Saturday. Women’s soccer hosts Virginia Wesleyan at 2:30 pm, football welcomes Emory & Henry to campus at 1:00 pm and women’s cross country will split between the Connecticut College Invitational (11:00 am) and the Gettysburg Invitational (11:00 am).
