LEXINGTON, Va. — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its Google Cloud Academic All-America All-District At-Large men’s teams on Thursday, and Washington and Lee had two athletes honored.
Senior golfer Luke Farley (Durham, N.C./Trinity School) and senior swimmer Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala./The Altamont) were among the 10 men recognized on the District 5 squad. This marks the third academic all-district honor for Thetford and the second for Farley.
A mathematics major, Farley is currently competing at the NCAA National Championship, along with the rest of his teammates. Coming into the week, he had played 75 career rounds and claimed a 75.41 career scoring average, and he is currently ranked 61st in Division III. Farley has garnered All-ODAC honors four times in his career, and he has been named the ODAC Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year twice.
A 2017 CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-America selection, Farley also received Cleveland Golf/Srixon Scholar All-America honors in 2017 and 2018. In 2016, he was the recipient of the Elite 90 Award for Division III men's golf as the player with the highest GPA at the National Championship site. Farley has finished in the Top 10 all four times at the ODAC Championship in his career, highlighted by a second-place finish at the 2016 tournament.
Also a mathematics major, Thetford earned a total of 10 All-America citations in men’s swimming, including six First Team All-America laurels, and is one of just two athletes in school history to have claimed two individual National Championships.
Thetford currently holds the school record in the 50 free (19.65), 100 free (43.41) and 200 free (1:36.87), and he is a member of the school record-holding 400 medley relay (3:23.90), 400 free relay (3:01.77) and 800 free relay (6:41.18) teams.
Thetford is a 23-time ODAC champion (10 individual, 13 relays), a four-time First Team All-ODAC honoree, a two-time ODAC Swimmer of the Meet and a two-time ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Men's Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was also named the ODAC Rookie of the Year in 2015.
A two-time CSCAA First Team Scholar All-America selection, he claimed CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-America honors as a sophomore and junior as well. As a sophomore, he won the NCAA Division III Championship in the in the 100 free (43.41) and the 200 free (1:36.87), and was second in the 50 free (19.65).
Thetford competed in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 50-meter freestyle, finishing in a tie for 66th out of 165 competitors with a time of 23.20.
The criteria for the CoSIDA Google Cloud All-District program states that a player must be of sophomore academic standing, be a starter or important reserve and claim a GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. Washington and Lee is a member of District 5, which includes players from small colleges in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
With their First Team All-District selections, both athletes will now go on the national ballot to be considered for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
