Murray, O'Connor & Townsend Nab Weekly ODAC Honors

Dani Murray '20, Joe O'Connor '22 and Beth Ann Townsend '21 - all named ODAC Athletes of the Week on March 18.

FOREST, Va. — The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced its Athletes of the Week on Monday for the week ending March 17, and Washington and Lee had three athletes honored.

Junior attacker Dani Murray (Denver, Colo. / Kent Denver) was named the Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week, first-year Joe O'Connor (Henrico, Va./Douglas Freeman) earned the Men's Field Athlete of the Week distinction and sophomore Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, S.C./Travelers Rest) garnered the Women's Golfer of the Week award.

Murray totaled nine goals and one assist to lead the third-ranked women's lacrosse team to a pair of victories last week. Against Dickinson on Wednesday, she notched four goals and one assist, along with one ground ball and one draw control in a 19-11 win. She followed that with a season-high five goals and two ground balls in a 14-13 victory on Saturday over St. Mary's (Md.).

Murray now has 16 goals on the year and three assists for 19 points. She's also totaled six ground balls, nine draw controls and three caused turnovers.

O'Connor registered three Top 6 finishes to lead the men's track and field team on Friday and Saturday at the W&L Carnival. He was second in the pole vault at 4.42m (14'6.00"), fourth in the 110m hurdles (15.96) and sixth in the high jump at 1.89m (6'2.25").

O'Connor's mark in the pole vault is the best in the ODAC this year, his high jump mark is tied for the top spot in the league and his 110m hurdles time is the sixth-fastest in the conference this spring.

Townsend helped lead the 19th-ranked women's golf team to a fifth-place finish out of 21 teams at the Jekyll Island Invitational over the weekend. As a team, the Generals climbed the leaderboard from a tie for 11th on the first day to the eventual fifth-place showing with a 326-319-314—959 (+95).

Individually, Townsend finished 14th out of 119 golfers with a +16 score of 82-75-75--232.  It was her fourth Top 20 finish in four events played this season. She had won the Callaway Gardens Invitational in her last tournament played. For the season, Townsend has played eight rounds and has posted a 77.0 scoring average.

The women's lacrosse team opens ODAC play on Tuesday, when it host Randolph at 4:30 pm. The women's golf team returns to action in the Piedmont Spring Invitational on April 1-2 at The Orchard Golf & Country Club in Clarkesville, Ga., and the men's track and field team competes at the Lynchburg Jack Toms Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
