FOREST, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its Athletes of the Week on Monday for the week ending March 10, and Washington and Lee first-years Alex Fedor (Salem, Ore./South Salem) and Taylor Garcia (Mandeville, La./Mount Carmel Academy) were recognized as the Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week.
Fedor helped the men's tennis team to a 1-1 week by posting a 2-0 singles record and a 1-1 doubles mark.
In an 8-1 win over Guilford on Wednesday, he toppled GC's Mason Robb at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 10-7 and teamed with sophomore Tye Loan (Bremerton, Wash./Olympic) to down the tandem of Logan Glass and Tim Thompson at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
In a 7-2 loss to No. 21 Johns Hopkins on Sunday, he defeated Scott Thygesen at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 10-6 and teamed with Loan to fall 8-4 at No. 3 doubles against Vik Vasan and Vishnu Joshi.
For the year, Fedor is 5-2 in singles and 4-3 in doubles.
Garcia helped the 24th-ranked women's tennis team to a 1-1 record in two of the three team matches played last week by going 2-0 in doubles and 1-0 in singles.
She earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Virginia Wesleyan Christine Zalameda in No. 1 singles and paired with first-year Georgia Wright (Austin, Texas / Regents School of Austin) in No. 1 doubles to claim an 8-2 win over Audrey Bally and Katie Staman.
In Saturday's 7-2 loss to Division I Longwood, Garcia secured one of the team's two team points, as she and Wright defeated Yulia Almiron and Jamie Breunig, 8-4, in No. 1 doubles.
Garcia is now 5-3 in singles competition this season and 4-4 in doubles.
Both tennis teams return to action this Saturday, with the men traveling to Mary Washington for a 2:00 pm match, while the women will face No. 21 Kenyon at 1:00 pm on the first day of the Blue Gray Invite at UMW.
