Kris Hoey is in her eighth season as head women’s cross country and assistant track coach at Washington and Lee.
Under Hoey’s guidance, the Generals won five-straight ODAC
Championship from 2004-2008. with seven runners being named
all-conference and Hoey was named ODAC Coach of the Year.
W&L captured a second-place finish at the conference meet in
2009, snapping the streak of five-consecutive league titles. She
had five runners gain all-conference honors. Hoey also led the
Generals to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Regionals as three
runners were named all-region and one qualified for NCAAs. Hoey has
had at least one athlete qualify for the NCAA National
championships the last four years.
In her seven seasons at W&L Hoey’s teams have won five
ODAC Championships, she has led runners to eight NCAA qualifying
performances, 18 all-region honorees, 36 all-conference award
winners, five individual ODAC Cross Country Champions. Hoey
has also been named ODAC Coach of the Year five times.
During the track season Hoey leads the Generals women’s
middle distance and distance runners. At the 2009 Indoor ODAC
Championship Meet, her athletes won every middle-distance and
distance event (the 800m, Mile, 5,000m and the Distance Medley
Relay). At the Outdoors ODAC Championship Meet, they repeated the
same feet winning the 800m, 1500m and 5,000m and 3,000m
steeplechase events. Hoey also guided Elizabeth Webb to an NCAA
National qualifying performance in the Mile where she finished
9th.
Hoey came to W&L from Rockbridge County High where she was the
head boy’s cross country coach for one season. During that
time she also served as a volunteer assistant track coach at VMI,
working with the steeplechasers, middle distance and distance
runners.
At Rockbridge County, Hoey led the Wildcats to a runner-up finish
at the State Championship and guided John Crews to the individual
district, region and state championship and a 13th-place finish at
the 2003 Junior National Cross Country Championships.
Prior to arriving in the Shenandoah Valley, Hoey served as the
interim head cross country and track and field coach at West
Chester University during the 2001-02 season and was the assistant
coach at WCU from 1998-01.
During her one season as head coach at WCU, she helped mentor one
All-American, three Academic All-Americans, two national
qualifiers, four conference champions and 22 all-conference
athletes while helping her athletes set four new school records.
Her men’s and women’s cross country teams were named to
the National All-Academic team.
A 1998 graduate of West Chester with a bachelor of science in
health and physical education, Hoey was a four-year letterwinner
for both the cross country and track and field programs. She was
twice named the cross country team MVP and served as team captain
during her senior season when she earned All-Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference honors. In track and field, Hoey was twice
named All-ECAC and garnered All-PSAC recognition as a senior.
Active in the sport, Hoey competed in the steeplechase at the 2001
USA Outdoor National T&F Championships and was the Olympic
Development Steeplechase Champion at the 2001 Penn Relays, setting
a meet record. In addition, Hoey placed 11th at the 2000 U.S.
Olympic Trials. She is a USA Track and Field Level I and Level II
Certified Coach.
Hoey is married to Head Track and Field Coach Nate Hoey. The
couple recently welcomed their first child -- a daughter, Chase
Maya, in April of 2007.
Brandon Uhl is in his third year as a full time assistant track & field coach at Washington and Lee. Uhl also served as a volunteer assistant for the Generals in the spring of 2004 and for the 2006-07 school year. During his short time at W&L, Uhl has been part of the staff that led the women’s team to its first-ever indoor conference championship. He has helped guide an athlete to All-America status in the pentathlon, a school record in the women’s indoor & outdoor long jump, and has guided numerous other student-athletes to all-conference awards.
Prior to coming back to W&L, Uhl served as the head cross country and track & field coach at College Misericordia from 2004-06, where he coached one NCAA All-American, two NCAA qualifiers, 40 all-conference student-athletes, five conference champions and guided athletes to 39 school records. He was named the 2004 and 2005 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Before volunteering with the Generals in the spring of 2004, Uhl served as a graduate assistant track & field coach at Frostburg State (Md.), earning a master of science degree in human performance. While at Frostburg, Uhl was responsible for the development of the men’s and women’s jumpers and assisting with the sprinters. In two seasons, he had an ECAC champion and a jumper provisionally qualify for NCAA’s. In all, he coached student-athletes to six All-ECAC awards and 10 All-Mason Dixon Conference awards.
Uhl is a 2001 graduate of Slippery Rock University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in exercise science. While at SRU, Uhl was a school record holder and provisional national qualifier in the triple jump. He was an eight-time all-conference student-athlete, two-time conference champion and was named athlete of the year his senior season.
Uhl is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He also holds USATF Level II certification in the Jumps.
Uhl and his wife, Alice, reside in Fincastle, Va.
