Kris Hoey is in her eighth season as head women’s cross country and assistant track coach at Washington and Lee.
Under Hoey’s guidance, the Generals won five-straight ODAC
Championship from 2004-2008, and W&L returned to the top of the
conference in 2010. In 2010, Hoey had seven runners earn
all-conference honors and she was named ODAC Coach of the
Year. W&L captured a second-place finish at the
conference meet in 2009, snapping the streak of five-consecutive
league titles. She had five runners gain all-conference honors.
Hoey also led the Generals to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA
Regionals as three runners were named all-region and one qualified
for NCAAs. Hoey has had at least one athlete qualify for the NCAA
National championships the last four years.
In her seven seasons at W&L Hoey’s teams have won five
ODAC Championships, she has led runners to eight NCAA qualifying
performances, 18 all-region honorees, 36 all-conference award
winners, five individual ODAC Cross Country Champions. Hoey
has also been named ODAC Coach of the Year five times.
During the track season Hoey leads the Generals women’s
middle distance and distance runners. At the 2009 Indoor ODAC
Championship Meet, her athletes won every middle-distance and
distance event (the 800m, Mile, 5,000m and the Distance Medley
Relay). At the Outdoors ODAC Championship Meet, they repeated the
same feet winning the 800m, 1500m and 5,000m and 3,000m
steeplechase events. Hoey also guided Elizabeth Webb to an NCAA
National qualifying performance in the Mile where she finished
9th.
Hoey came to W&L from Rockbridge County High where she was the
head boy’s cross country coach for one season. During that
time she also served as a volunteer assistant track coach at VMI,
working with the steeplechasers, middle distance and distance
runners.
At Rockbridge County, Hoey led the Wildcats to a runner-up finish
at the State Championship and guided John Crews to the individual
district, region and state championship and a 13th-place finish at
the 2003 Junior National Cross Country Championships.
Prior to arriving in the Shenandoah Valley, Hoey served as the
interim head cross country and track and field coach at West
Chester University during the 2001-02 season and was the assistant
coach at WCU from 1998-01.
During her one season as head coach at WCU, she helped mentor one
All-American, three Academic All-Americans, two national
qualifiers, four conference champions and 22 all-conference
athletes while helping her athletes set four new school records.
Her men’s and women’s cross country teams were named to
the National All-Academic team.
A 1998 graduate of West Chester with a bachelor of science in
health and physical education, Hoey was a four-year letterwinner
for both the cross country and track and field programs. She was
twice named the cross country team MVP and served as team captain
during her senior season when she earned All-Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference honors. In track and field, Hoey was twice
named All-ECAC and garnered All-PSAC recognition as a senior.
Active in the sport, Hoey competed in the steeplechase at the 2001
USA Outdoor National T&F Championships and was the Olympic
Development Steeplechase Champion at the 2001 Penn Relays, setting
a meet record. In addition, Hoey placed 11th at the 2000 U.S.
Olympic Trials. She is a USA Track and Field Level I and Level II
Certified Coach.
Hoey is married to Head Track and Field Coach Nate Hoey. They
reside in Rockbridge County with their daughter, Chase Maya.

Nate Hoey is in his ninth year with the athletic staff at Washington and Lee University. He currently serves as the head coach for the women’s track and field program and as an assistant coach with the women’s cross country program.
During his first eight years with the University, Hoey served as the director of running programs and head men’s and women’s track & field coach. In this role, he proceeded to lift the Generals’ running programs to new heights.
Hoey guided the women’s team to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Indoor Championship title in 2009 and, in 2010, the W&L men’s track & field team finished second overall at the conference championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, the program’s best finishes in better than 15 years.
Individually, Hoey’s athletes have excelled, breaking school records a total of 180 times (15 conference records as well), while 176 athletes have received all-conference recognition for their performances. He has also coached W&L athletes to 81 conference championships, while his athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships a total of 25 times. Additionally, 14 of his athletes have been named the ODAC Athlete of the Year, while eight have been named the ODAC Rookie of the Year in their sport.
Hoey has also mentored his athletes to All-America honors four times, two in the heptathlon (Stacy Doornbos), one in the pentathlon (Stacy Doornbos) and one in the 5,000 meters (Jessica Shaw).
Hoey’s athletes have also excelled in the classroom, with a grand total of 186 students earning W&L Scholar-Athlete honors for achieving a 3.5 GPA or better in a term during the school year. Additionally, 27 athletes have been named to the USTFCCA Academic All-America teams and 19 times Hoey’s athletes have been named the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Three athletes have also received the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
For his efforts, Hoey has twice been named the ODAC Coach of the Year (2008 & 2009). He was also honored as the NCAA South/Southeast Region Coach of the Year by the USTFCCA twice – for the women’s indoor season in 2009 and again for the men’s indoor season in 2011.
During the 2011 season, Hoey’s men’s and women’s teams accumulated 45 all-conference performances, 15 school records and 12 conference championships.
Prior to his appointment at W&L, Hoey served as the assistant cross country and track and field coach at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. He was responsible for the development of the men's and women's sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and throwers. In two seasons at the NCAA Division II school, he guided athletes to one All-America and 18 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Awards. His commitment to academic excellence was demonstrated when the WCU Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams earned National All-Academic Team recognition in 2001.
Hoey is a 2000 graduate of Slippery Rock University with a degree in exercise and sport science. While at SRU he was a 13-time All-Conference track and field athlete, three-time conference champion, was twice named PSAC Athlete of the Year, and was a PSAC record holder.
Hoey is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, holds the Club Coach Certification from USA Weightlifting, is a USA Track & Field Level III Certified coach in the combined events and is a Level II Certified Coach in the jumps, sprints, hurdles and relays. He is also certified through the Pole Vault Safety Certification Board.
Hoey holds the rank of associate professor of physical education at the University. He is married to Assistant Women’s Track & Field Coach and Head Women's Cross Country Coach Kris Hoey. The couple reside in Rockbridge County with their daughter, Chase Maya.
