Kris Hoey is in her 10th season as head women’s cross country and assistant track coach at Washington and Lee.

Under Hoey’s guidance, the Generals won the ODAC Championship in seven of nine seasons. W&L won five-straight ODAC Championship from 2004-2008, claimed the crown again in 2010 and secured the championship in 2012. In winning the 2012 title, the Generals took five of the Top 9 spots, including three First Team All-ODAC performances. W&L went on to finish fourth at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional, the eighth straight year that the Generals finished among the Top 8 teams in the region. Lauren Schultz and Molly Ortiz each finished in the Top 9, and went on to compete at the National Championships. Hoey has had at least one athlete qualify for the NCAA National Championships the last six years.

In her nine seasons at W&L, Hoey’s teams have won five ODAC Championships, she has led runners to 11 NCAA qualifying performances, 23 all-region honorees, 44 all-conference award winners and five individual ODAC Cross Country Champions. Hoey has also been named ODAC Coach of the Year seven times.

During the track season, Hoey leads the Generals' women’s middle distance and distance runners. At the 2009 Indoor ODAC Championship Meet, her athletes won every middle-distance and distance event (the 800m, Mile, 5,000m and the Distance Medley Relay). At the Outdoors ODAC Championship Meet, they repeated the same feet winning the 800m, 1500m and 5,000m and 3,000m steeplechase events. Hoey also guided Elizabeth Webb to an NCAA National qualifying performance in the Mile where she finished ninth.

Hoey came to W&L from Rockbridge County High where she was the head boy’s cross country coach for one season. During that time she also served as a volunteer assistant track coach at VMI, working with the steeplechasers, middle distance and distance runners.

At Rockbridge County, Hoey led the Wildcats to a runner-up finish at the State Championship and guided John Crews to the individual district, region and state championship and a 13th-place finish at the 2003 Junior National Cross Country Championships.

Prior to arriving in the Shenandoah Valley, Hoey served as the interim head cross country and track and field coach at West Chester University during the 2001-02 season and was the assistant coach at WCU from 1998-01.

During her one season as head coach at WCU, she helped mentor one All-American, three Academic All-Americans, two national qualifiers, four conference champions and 22 all-conference athletes while helping her athletes set four new school records. Her men’s and women’s cross country teams were named to the National All-Academic team.

A 1998 graduate of West Chester with a bachelor of science in health and physical education, Hoey was a four-year letterwinner for both the cross country and track and field programs. She was twice named the cross country team MVP and served as team captain during her senior season when she earned All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference honors. In track and field, Hoey was twice named All-ECAC and garnered All-PSAC recognition as a senior.

Active in the sport, Hoey competed in the steeplechase at the 2001 USA Outdoor National T&F Championships and was the Olympic Development Steeplechase Champion at the 2001 Penn Relays, setting a meet record. In addition, Hoey placed 11th at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials. She is a USA Track and Field Level I and Level II Certified Coach.

Hoey is married to Head Women's Track and Field Coach Nate Hoey. They reside in Rockbridge County with their daughter, Chase Maya.
