W&L CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS FINISH FOURTH AT NCAA SOUTH/SOUTHEAST REGIONAL

CONWAY, Ark. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished fourth overall at the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championships hosted by Hendrix College on Saturday afternoon.

The W&L men placed fourth of 18 teams and were led by a pair of all-region runners in senior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) and sophomore Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier/Singapore American). Johnson placed third overall with a time of 25:11.4 to qualify for the NCAA National Championships for the second straight season. Mahoney finished sixth overall and narrowly missed a bid to nationals with a time of 25:35.7.

Freshmen Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) and Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal), and sophomore Andrew Friski (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) also scored for the Generals. Welsh finished 29th (26:25.2), Berry placed 48th (26:58.6) and Friski crossed the tape 56th with a time of 27:13.2.

The W&L women produced a fourth place showing out of 22 teams. Freshman Jackie Burns (Burke, Va./Woodward Academy), senior Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) and sophomore Lindsay Erickson (Silver Spring, Md./Stone Ridge) all earned all-region accolades with their finishes. Burns placed 11th overall with a time of 23:06.2, Christopher was 25th overall with a time of 23:39.5 and Erickson completed the course in 23:39.9, placing 26th overall.

Freshman Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) and junior Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East) also scored for the Generals, placing 36th and 48th, respectively, Taylor finished in 24:07.2 ad Ratzel crossed the finish line in 24:30.1.

Both W&L teams have now completed their season, but Johnson will continue on as an individual in the NCAA Cross Country Championships held next Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University. The men’s race begins at 12:00 noon.

W&L CROSS COUNTRY SWEEPS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams swept the team and individual honors at the ODAC Championships held at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday afternoon. The W&L men finished first of nine teams, while the women were first of eight teams.

Additionally, senior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) won the men’s race to earn ODAC Runner of the Year honors for the second straight season. For the women, freshman Jackie Burns (Burke, Va./Woodward Academy) finished first overall to claim ODAC Runner and Rookie of the Year honors. Both Johnson and senior Liz Twentyman (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) were named the ODAC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Johnson completed the course in 26:05.0 and was followed by sophomore Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier/Singapore American), who finished second with a time of 26:10.5. Freshman Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) placed fifth overall (26:55.1) to join Johnson and Mahoney on the All-ODAC First Team. Freshman Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Episcopal), senior Andrew Johnson (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) and sophomore Andrew Friski (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) all earned Second Team All-ODAC accolades. Berry placed eighth (27:29.2), Johnson placed 10th (27:38.6) and Friski finished 12th (27:47.1).

Burns crossed the tape in 23:47.2 and was followed by sophomore Lindsay Erickson (Silver Spring, Md./Stone Ridge) who finished second with a time of 24:08.1. Freshman Rebecca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) and senior Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) joined Burns and Erickson in earning First Team All-ODAC honors. Taylor placed fourth with a time of 24:26.7, while Christopher finished seventh with a time of 24:38.6. Junior Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East) earned Second Team All-ODAC honors after finishing 11th overall (25:06.5).

W&L will return to action on Sat., Nov. 12 as it competes in the NCAA South/Southeast Regional held in Conway, Ark.

W&L CROSS COUNTRY IN ACTION AT WINTHROP INVITATIONAL

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The men placed sixth out of 14 teams, while the women were seventh out of 15 teams.

In the men’s meet, senior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) placed fourth out of 127 runners in a time of 19:08.50. Sophomore Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier/Singapore American) was 14th in 19:32.90 and freshman Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) finished 21st in 19:53.90.

In the women’s meet, freshman Jackie Burns (Burke, Va./Woodward Academy) finished 15th out of 122 runners in a time of 15:31.50. Freshman Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) was 38th in 16:17.00 and senior Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) placed 41st in 16:22.80.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sat., Oct 29 as it competes at the ODAC Championship hosted by Guilford College at 12:00 pm.

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at the Virginia State Division II-III meet hosted by Eastern Mennonite University. The men’s team placed first out of seven teams, while the women were also first out of seven teams.

In the men’s meet, senior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) won the race in a time of 27:32, while sophomore Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier/Singapore American) was second in 27:42. Freshman Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) rounded out the Top 5 with a fourth place finish in a time of 28:12. Senior Andrew Johnson (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) also finished in the Top 10 by crossing the tape in 10th place in 29:46.

In the women’s meet, freshmen Jackie Burns (Burke, Va./Woodward Academy) won the race in a time of 24:49. Freshman Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) was fourth in a time of 26:06 and senior Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) finished seventh in a time of 26:21.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee cross country teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at the Greensboro Invitational held at Hagan Stone Park in Greensboro, N.C. Both the W&L men’s and women’s team finished second among Division III schools competing in the meet.

For the women, sophomore Lindsay Erickson (Silver Spring, Md./Stone Ridge) finished second among Division III runners and fourth overall with a time of 20:06.3. Senior Elizabeth Twentyman (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) placed eighth overall with a time of 20:26.6, while junior Jenny Ratzel (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East) placed ninth (20:34.9) and senior Mary Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) was 10th (20:36.4).

For the men, sophomore Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier/Singapore American) placed first among Division III runners and third overall with a time of 26:34.1. Freshman Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) placed 11th overall with a time of 27:10.7, while senior Andrew Johnson (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) finished 18th overall with a time of 28:04.0.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sat., Oct. 8 as it competes in the Virginia Division III Championships held at the Peak View Farms in Harrisonburg, Va.

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams were in action on Saturday afternoon at the New York Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The men’s team placed third out of 24 teams, while the women were third out of 22 squads.

In the men’s meet, senior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) crossed the tape in fourth place in a time of 27:28, while sophomore Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier/Singapore American) was fifth in 27:30. Freshman Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) also finished in the Top 20 with a 19th place finish in a time of 28:20.

In the women’s meet, freshmen Jackie Burns (Burke, Va./Woodward Academy) finished eighth in a time of 20:19. Sophomore Lindsay Erickson (Silver Spring, Md./Stone Ridge) and freshman Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) crossed the finish line in 22nd (21:07) and 23rd (21:08) place, respectively.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s cross country teams opened their 2005 season on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Invitational. The men’s team placed second out of seven teams, while the women’s were second out of nine squads.

In the men’s meet, sophomore Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier/Singapore American) won the race in a time of 27:46.00. Mahoney was followed by freshman Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma), who placed third in a time of 28:40. Senior Andrew Johnson (Blairstown, N.J./Blair Academy) also finished in the Top 10 by crossing the tape in 10th place in a time of 30:03.

In the women’s meet, the Generals had a pair of Top 10 finishers in freshmen Jackie Burns (Burke, Va./Woodward Academy) and Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood). Burns placed second in 20:41, while Taylor was seventh in 21:41. Senior Liz Twentyman (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) took 12th in a time of 22:27. Misericordia’s Amy Bower won the race with a time of 19:10.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday at the NYU Invitational at 10:00 am.
