CARLISLE, Pa. — The Washington and Lee women's cross country team began the 2016 season on Thursday evening by taking second (51 points) out of five teams at the Light Up the Night Invitational hosted by Dickinson.
The Generals, while holding out three of their top runners, finished behind 35th-ranked Dickinson (18 points). Messiah placed third with 66 points.
Sophomore Kirsten McMichael (Eighty Four, Pa./Ringgold) crossed the finish line fifth (19:21.50) to lead the Blue and White in the 5K race. Junior Sofia Canning of Dickinson took first out of 70 competitors in 18:33.00. First-year Julia Moody (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) was a few seconds behind McMichael to finish sixth with a time of 19:47.20.
Junior Lily Arnold (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) claimed 12th in 20:09.80. First-year Katie Bearup (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) was one spot behind Arnold in 13th (20:12.6), and sophomore Kristi Miluski (Tall Timbers, Md./Leonardtown) rounded out the scoring for W&L by placing 21st in 20:47.90.
The Generals next compete at home on Friday, September 9, when they host the ODAC Preview Meet at the Buena Vista Golf Club at 6:15 pm.
