W&L Women's Cross Country Takes Fifth at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The Washington and Lee women's cross country team placed two first-years in the Top 10 in taking fifth out of seven teams at the Galen Piper Invitational hosted by Shippensburg on Friday.

Elizabethtown won the team title with 63 points, Dickinson (69 points) was second and Shippensburg claimed third with 72 points. The Generals, the fourth-best collegiate team, totaled 98 points.

First-year Samantha Yates (Birmingham, Ala./St. Paul's School) claimed sixth overall out of 116 runners with a time of 15:12 on the 4K course. Mary Dell of the Shippensburg Alum team won the race in 14:20. First-year Maggie Seybold (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh School) took 10th in 15:18 and sophomore Rachel Steffen (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) was 15th (15:34).

First-year Kirsten McMichael (Eighty Four, Pa./Ringgold) finished 33rd overall with a time of 16:13, and senior Rachel Solomon (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep) placed 45th (16:44).

The Generals next compete at the ODAC Preview hosted by Bridgewater on Friday, September 11, at 5:45 pm.
